My boyfriend has, what I think is a sleep disorder. Wondering if it really is, and if so if there's any help that can be sought?
Once asleep he does NOT wake up. What is happening is that when he has an important thing he needs to be up for, we set 2 seperate alarm clocks, volume at maximum, and put them on the table right next to where his head is. I also put our telephone on his pillow. The alarms go off, and he doesn't wake up. I can call him over and over on the phone that is ringing next to his ear, and he still won't wake up. He will either sleep through all this, or else I have to come home from work or wherever I am and shake him awake. Shaking him awake is the only thing that makes him come out of it. And even after that, if I leave the room for a second, he is back deep asleep.
This is becoming a huge problem. He sleeps through work, he sleeps through appointments. He is on an anti-deppressant, but this behaviour was already present before he was on it. He drinks NO alcohol.
Help! This is ruining his life and making friends and bosses very mad - they don't believe that he could sleep through all this. But I've witnessed it - it happens. And I'm sick of having to spend 20+ minutes a day getting him out of bed when I am around!

Most likely. There is no way of telling if and what kind of sleep disorder he may have without knowing his medical history or testing. The most obvious answer as far as seeking help is to just go to the doctor.

assuming he is getting enough sleep, the problem may be caused by depression
a sleep disorder usually causes the sufferer to snore or choke or thrash around in their sleep

Just go to the doctor. There are about 84 sleep disorders and may other health problems that can cause this. Not really something we can help with on a message board.

As noted above, he could have another kind of sleep disorder. There are many in which the person does not snore, cough or display at night. If he struggles with sleepiness on weekends or during the day during the workweek- this is suspicious of a sleep disorder. Have him see a certified Board Sleep Specialist in your area, usually the larger hospitals will have one.
