My 15 month old was always kinda chunky as an infant and he charted very well on the percentile chart but the last 4 months he has dropped steadily. The doctor said he wasn't too concerned but that we were going to "keep an eye on it". I know that it's normal for babies to loose a little since they are more mobile and such but would it be such a steady drop? He weighs 21.13 ounces and he will gain a few ounces and then loose it again. I would be worried he might be sick or something but I'm almost certain I know why he isn't gaining weight very well...it's almost a struggle to get him to eat at meal times. He has to have something to play with while he eats so that it distracts him from the fact he is eating something. He is a picky eater and the dr. advised me to NOT force him to eat. But, on the same note I'm not going to let him starve.
I have tried many different things at meal times to get to eat, singing to him, making the meal fun, talking to him, but a lot of times he just fusses and won't eat but maybe half of what I'm feeding him.
Anyone else gone through this same thing??

My son is 4 months old and hates eating due to acid reflux. We have to distract him and pop the pacifire in and out to get him to take his bottle. This doesn't sound like your problem but my son too lost weight and struggles to gain well even on medicine. As long as he isn't acting sick or in pain then the only thing you could do is keep an eye on it. Toddlers are by nature picky eaters and I have known many parents that struggle getting their kids to take a couple bites of food. Maybe you could give him food higher in calories? Of course it should still be nutritious but this could help with the weight gain. Check to see if there are any special drinks available (like ensure but that is for adults) to give him. Goodluck!

I think this is pretty normal at this age.My daughter is 17 months and it seems like I'm always trying to get her to eat.She has never been fussy, she just decided one day that she didn't want to eat.She will go for days like this and then she'll be like she can't get enough food for days.I think the pattern follows her growing spurts. When she is having her not eating days I find if I don't put her at the table for meals and just hand her snacks throughout the day she will eat.It can get messy as she is wandering around with food but at least she is eating.Like I said though this is normal and children will not starve themselves they will eat when that get hungry.I'm like you though I feel like I have to feed her so I just go with the snacks and give her stuff that is good for her so she will get the most out of these bits that she is eating.
I hope this has helped some.

I have 4 boys and with each one when they hit 12 months they started dropping from the 75th percentile to the 50th to the 25th. My 13 year old is now larger than most kids in his class. The 7 year old is still the smallest. They are all different.
I have noticed that each of them went through times when they would not eat anything and then a couple of years later they would not stop eating.
I wouldn't worry unless they eat nothing at all. After that first year of growing and growing their bodies just slow down and don't need as much.
