For about 2 weeks now I've been starting my day with a small bowl of either Complete Bran Flakes or Special K almond vanilla cereal and Low fat Vanilla Soy Milk, it tastes really good!! :) And I just wanted to know if there is any reason this isn't good for me. Is soy milk healthier for you than regular milk? I'm trying to lose weight and be healthy, so if anyone knows any info on this it'd be appreciated.

Thanx :bouncing:

I was wondering the same thing too. I drink at least a cup of soy or rice milk everyday. You should try rice milk - its DIVINE!!

There are differing opinions about whether or not it is a good idea to eat various forms of soy and how much. If you google it, you will come up with all kinds of debate. It's one of those things you just have to make up your down mind about.

I wouldn't say soya is bad for you unless you have hormone problems as it contains estrogen (or encourages estrogen production not entirely sure which one it is) The thing you should look out for is the sugar level in the vanilla one (I don't know if it's natural or added sugar) go for un-sweetened if possible (although it's taste is vile!!) Try and get a non-gm organic kind as this is sooo much better for you.

Unless you're vegan I would suggest making sure you incorporate both the soy milk and 1-2% real milk into your diet. Real milk probably has more nautral calcium, and I'd buy soy milk that has calcium added to it (I'm not sure what the difference in calcium amount between the two is), because women need a lot more calcium than they take in. I agree, vanilla soy milk is SO good, especailly in cereal. I don't think one or the other is necessarily better for you, just make sure you're getting enough calcium.

actually, soy products contain phytoestrogens, which are not a hormone like the estrogen we make. they are estrogen-like compounds. if the body has insufficient estrogen, phytoestrogen binds to estrogen receptor sites and acts roughly as estrogen would. if the body has too much estrogen, it binds to some of the receptor cells, inhibiting too much estrogen from binding there. so, in other words, it helps to balance the hormone.

fortified soymilk has as much calcium and vitamin D as cow's milk without the cholesterol and saturated fat and also, unlike milk, it doesn't contain any pus cells.

i really like the silk soymilk, personally.

In my opinion, soymilk is 100 times healthier than regular milk. It doesn't have anitbiotics and growth hormones like regular milk does. And it tastes great.

Well Soy Milk is good for you, but so is regular milk. I don't really care for soy milk, I can't drink any dairy due to my Crohn's and my doctor recommended Silk Milk, which I think is rice milk. I didn't like it because it was so sweet. I've always been a regular milk person though, so maybe that's why I don't like it?

You should try Rice Dream rice milk in natural its DIVINE. Its much less sweeter than some of the soymilks. Its about as close to milk as you can get - and looks just like it too.

I read an article about the dangers of giving soy to babies on up through teenagers, because of the phyto-estrogen issues. It definitely affects the hormones, so I'd definitely avoid it if you are a male and not an adult yet.

In my opinion, there is so much conflicting information related to soy milk vs. cow's milk. Just the thought of something that is hormone inducing freaks me out. I was caught up in a dilemma between cow's milk and Rice milk and when I switched to rice milk, I noticed how I put on weight as opposed to cow's milk. Also, there is some controversial information pertaining to soy milk, like how it can cause thyroid problems etc. I buy organic fat free cow's milk without any hormones or antibiotics and use it in my cereal. The only unhealthy thing about cow's milk is the antibiotics and pesticides the conventional kind contains. Other than that, I think milk is good for you!! Who knows, I may be wrong but I'm going to continue to go with my instincts!!
