Hi--

I was wondering how many of us seek counseling for living with chronic pain and having our lives turned upside down by fibromyalgia.

I go to a psychiatrist specifically for discussing fibromyalgia and how life has changed and how to accept those changes. It really does help--to vent, to share, to learn...

And I was wondering if others found it useful or just a waste of time in general since it's only for a short amount of time per week or couple of weeks.

Hi Ed,

Yeah, I think counseling is a GREAT idea for most of us, specifically, and for most adults, in general. I meet with a social worker and with a PhD (seperately) on a regular basis. Not just for the fibro, but for health issues is general. Several tools or stategies they've given have helped resolve tremendous issues, if not completely over come them, and it's WONDERFUL to be able to, honestly and completely dump all of the feeling that go along with this and many other illnesses. This can all be so frightening and overwhelming sometimes! It is good to have a place and person to hand all the misery to that we experience daily to a person that won't have an emotional investment in us (such as family and friends).

Good luck!

I have a great counselor. The reason I started was for depression. Goes hand in hand with being sick all the time. I have a really great counselor. However, sometimes a good counselor is as hard to find as a needle in a haystack.

Hi There,

I went to counseling as well for chronic pain, etc. He was a hypnotherapist which also helped teach me how to make myself feel a little better. I can't make the pain go away but I can detach from it and feel much better and less stressed.

We can't afford the copay so I haven't been for a year but I still call him and check in now and then.

I think we can all use it to reassure us that we're not crazy like other people sometimes think.

I have been going to a psychiatrist and a counselor for almost 9 years now for bi-polar disorder. Lately we have been focusing on sever depression due to the onset of fibro. I see both of them weekly until I go back to work on July 19. My psychiatrist took me out of work when I showed up at an appointment in extreme pain, fatigue, and a full blown anxiety attack. I go see her on my lunch hour. I am thankful for all that she has done for me. This has allowed me alot of time to reflect on getting better and getting happier. We are still working with meds and the depression is still moderate. My counselor has always been a life saver for me. I started seeing her just so I could talk to someone honestly about different things that were going on in my life and I have just stuck with her. I have come to love her and we have a special relationship. She says when she retires that I will be one that she keeps in contact with. Geez, I hope so. Cuz I'm gonna need her.

Through all of this with the fibro they have been GREAT! I wouldn't trade them for anything! I recommend at least counseling to everyone. ;)

My shrink just told me he's retiring, so I'm glad I posted this.
He gave me the name of a friend of his, so that I wouldn't be left with nobody. I was thinking of just giving up because he was so good I was a little fearful of trying someone knew, but I know I have to keep going---it does help with health issues because it's difficult for many people to understand.

thanks for the replies and inspiration,
Ed

HI Ed,

Just wanted to add that my Mom who is bipolar and has lots of other issues had a great counselor that moved away a year ago. She almost quit going because of the fear of a new person. But she realized she needed that help so she went to the new guy. He has turned out to be even better than the one who left and probably helped her the most of anyone she's seen in the last 30 years.

Just a little encouragement :bouncing:

Thanks--a little encouragement goes a long way.
