[SIZE=2][COLOR=Purple][FONT=Comic Sans MS]Hello everyone, I have had persistent heartburn for a few years now, and nothing has worked for me, I wound up having to take zantac over the counter up to 5 times a day to help, and it didn't really do the trick. My doctor put me on prevpak and i just started it today, the heartburn has subsided, but he seems to think i have a bacteria in my stomach, I have never heard of this. Have any of you experianced this or have you been on Prevpak, and if so did it work? any advice would be greatly apprieciated THANKS!!!!

Hi sweetangel,

Yes and Yes I have had the bacteria in the stomach, its called helicobacter pylori and it causes stomach ulcers. All you need is a simple blood test to know if you have it. I did a 7 day antibiotic treatment and still felt bad with the belches, that my mother said sounded like they were coming from the tips of my toes up...ha

Anyway I then had an endoscopy which showed I had inflammation, a hiatus hernia and helicobacter pylori. So, on to treatment two....its a killer of a treatment its very harsh on the stomach. Anyway I waited 8 weeks and then had a urea breath test which was negative to the helicobacter....My number was 4 and doc said it has to be over 200 to be positive. So, I am now clear of helicobacter. Dealing with the hiatus hernia now. My doc prescribed me 6 months of Nexium. So, I guess Im staying on them for awhile.

It would pay you to have the blood test and put your mind at ease, as many people on this board have suffered from helicobacter and it is painful. My doc said I shouldn't even know that I had it because its not painful. I know he's the expert and I'm not but I beg to differ with him on that.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Isobelle

Hi everyone!
I too had an endoscopy that was positive for Helicobacter Pylori. Surprise, surprise! It's the MOST common bacteria world wide. Anyway, I do feel a lot better after going on PrevPak. It was two weeks of antibiotics (heavy duty!) and I am waiting to go back to see if it cleared. Of course, I guess you can get reinfected. Even dogs carry it! Since I finished the two weeks of PrevPak, I started taking probiotics and eating lots of Activia Yogurt and DanActive. I think you should look into that.

Good luck to you!

Hello,
My name is Darcy and my mom has been diagnosed with Lymphoma. She was recently placed on Prev Pak. She hasn't had any of the side effects listed. My question is.... has anyone had any experience with this drug for treating stomach cancer? I just pray this works and she won't need chemotherapy.

I took it in June - since that my stomach has felt worse. I have gone back and forth to the doctor for different tests since then!

Darcy,

Prev-Pak is used to treat stomach ulcers caused by H pylori bacteria and not cancer in the lymph system. But, may be your Mom's Doctor is using it for something else.

As you know the Pak consist of 3 drugs -- 2 antibiotics (Biaxin & amoxicillin) and a proton pump inhibtor (Prevacid).

As lavender said -- the strong antibiotics can cause stomach problems-- like she is having. Usually gastritis that can be very difficult to treat--!!
