Billy2310 07-01-2004, 05:28 PM Hi I went to my eng and the doctor told me if I had problems with particles that will not move try the gans manuever! If you can do it yourself, can you explain what you do? Thanx Madeleine Billy2310 07-02-2004, 02:43 PM hi sit on the bed my right ear is bad this how you do it with a bad right ear!reverse for left ear! sitting on the bed I turn my head to the left hold that position fall to the right landing on your right shoulder not your back! you should still be looking up not to move your head position. then hold for 60 seconds or till dizzy stuff goes away then roll over to the left shoulder and barry your face in the pillow you should be lying on your left side shoulder not your back, with your face looking down into your pillow!hold that position for 60 seconds ! now dont move your body just your head lift head out of pillow to the right and look at the wall now back to the pillow face down.Do this three times in a row! then when you are done sit straight up dont bend foward when sitting up!Like the epley they say to sleep sitting up for 48 hours she said this was a more forceful way to get stuff moving threw the tube!Doctor Gans has a Balance center in florida im trying to research it now!also she did this manuever four times in a row to me ! we will see what happpens! Good luck! Billy2310 07-03-2004, 10:32 PM update I have had bppv for 6 years! I think something is happening,I am finding it is more comfortable to look left to right after the gans manuever also my balance is starting to change It feels like I was given a new shock absorber for my right or bad ear! I use to feel like I was walking to the right now my right side is firing back to the left like normal! I think I truley did have particles lying on top of nerve endings in the posterior canal! I also can spend more time on the computer also watching TV! I went on a 6 hour car trip today and for the first time in 6 years I enjoyed looking out the window at the mountains! I use to get sick looking at the side so back to the gans manuever its been 4 days the doctor stated in two weeeks I will feel pretty good! MMMMMMMM I think this manuever is good " and Ive done all of the manuevers"! GOOD LUCK ALL! quincy 07-04-2004, 03:19 AM Hi Billy, The Gans sounds like a cross between the Semont maneuver and the Epley......but it makes great sense. Actually, I've done this many times before when I had my attacks..didn't realise it was actually a formal maneuver. Oh, I've given up on doctors since there's nothing they can do considering the amount of time I have to wait for an appointment now-a-days. As well, there's nothing more they can do that I can't do at home. No fear there since the bottom line is to get the crystals moved out of the way....but, oh what a ride when they finally leave!! I've had BPPV (right ear) for almost 39 years, and it comes, it goes...some last for months or weeks. The last time (1999), my attack continued for almost 3 years with a few breaks in between. It started in both ears and the right ear improved instantly with the Semont maneuver, but continued in the left ear the rest of the time. I've never had symptoms so continual or as drastic as that...bleh! I do believe I also had an attack of Herpes in the left ear at the same time as well as sinus infections that caused the mayhem in there....but the big famous doc I waited months to see says no. Go figure...the only thing for him able to do was to snip the brain/ear nerve. Glad I passed on that one. In any event, it's great you've finally gotten relief from your attack..... Enjoy!! quincy Billy2310 07-04-2004, 12:28 PM Quincy wow someone just like me do you work now or what? I am a prison guard 10 years 6 years ago I had to stop work for a year! Ive been off for 3 months now! I work for the state so I get short term disabilty! This is the first time in six years that I feel like I moved all the particle out of the posterior canal or chamber! My dizzy off balance thing feels different now!My eng said that the particle have now moved into the utricle and are floating trying to resolve or stick to the one part in there where they are suppose to be! ITS strange my eng showed me the gans manuever and it was her last day at work she quit and was moving out of state! IS that what you call FATE or what! In the vertigo world you take any cutting edge knowledge when you can get it! My eng also said no one in the office knew the gans manuever! CLOSE CALL! GOOD LUCK! quincy 07-04-2004, 04:15 PM Hi, I'm not working full-time, but I was for the year when I was at my worst (interpreting in a school). I have a small hairdressing business as well where I go to people's homes..so, if I had a really bad day I could cancel. I'll be applying for a subbing job in the fall so looking forward to that. The best thing you can do is just continue "moving".....keeps the brain/body connections working. Don't take continual anti-vertigo meds (not suggesting you do), they don't help....but on really bad days where nausea is a factor, a half of Gravol always helped me. I do take Sudafed daily....my eustachian tubes get blocked (allergies?? sensitivites?? physical dysfunction??) and that seems to be an interesting connection as to when I started taking it and how I've been doing...keeps the sinus blocking at bay. I'm now taking 30mg once a day, was taking 60, but thought I should lower the dosage because I started to notice a bit of speeding up....I'm also on Effexor XR (low dosage), so lower is better anyway. I get a lot of "off" days....definitely weather influenced, as well as when I sleep too much (self-inflicted habit). A fluid connection for sure. We're human barometers :D Summer has always been a bad time for me, and with the changes we're having lately, I feel like I'm on the "verge" of having an attack.... Now that your maneuver has been successful, I'll make sure I follow it exactly (waiting the appropriate times after positioning and getting up without moving, etc) and when I get another attack I'll try it first. FYI...there's a book out by the Vestibular Disorders Association called "BPPV- What You Need to Know" by P.J. Haybach. Great info and definitely clarifies the guessing. I orded it when I was at my worst before I was able to get in to see the famous specialist.... It helped lessen the anxiety and guessing I was having about it...I think anyone with BPPV should at least look into it. Enjoy your new-found freedom....don't forget, you can also do the maneuver yourself since you've already experienced it. Sure beats waiting weeks to get in and the day of the appointment the symptoms mysteriously disappear  Not unlike BPPV, or at least what I've experienced. My other doctor who diagnosed me in '75 would see his patients within a day....this one -- NOT!! Seems a waste when diagnosis isn't the problem, but getting relief is. Keep well, quincy |
