Hi all, I am new to this site and it really sounds like you all have a lot of great experiences that we can share. I have read and been told that having a cat in the house is a risk for my young daughter. I was wondering if anyone has had any personal experiences with this issue or have any more information that they can share! Thanks and I look forward to your responses!

Hi! Welcome to the site! There are some very smart mommies/daddies that frequent the site:):) You will grow to depend a lot on it...lol! I have!~!

About the cat in the house. We are basically a zoo here at my house. 2 dachshunds and 2 cats. The two dogs are old dogs and they are fine with my 15 month old. The cats are such scaredy cats that they won't come in the same room as my son. They high tail it the other way lol! Maybe because he tries to yank their fur off? LOL..

I think it has a lot to do with the temperment of the cat. If you have had the cat for a lonnggg time then I think it COULD become a territorial thing for the cat. I don't know how old your daughter is but if she is still a baby I would recommend slowly introducing them to each other...maybe move the cat (and assuming it's an inside cat and that your house permits it) and it's litter box away from your daughter's room. Slowly start bringing the cat around your daughter and make sure you don't ignore the animal. Once the cat starts to get used to the new permanent "house guest" lol, it all should be fine. When I brought my son home from the hospital I wouldn't allow the cats anywhere near his room because my grandmother told me a story about her cat going into my mother's room when she was an infant and jumping into her crib and licking a little milk that had dribbled out onto her chin. My grandma sold the cat the next day. So, I just made sure that I kept my son's door closed whenever I could. My cats never bothered him.

Just keep an eye on the cat whenever she is around the baby and see how the cat reacts. Personally, I don't think a cat is harmful to a child unless the cat/animal is unhealthy or extremely territorial ...and then you would know that right off the bat! Good luck!

Well, that is reassuring. I guess that I had heard somewhere that a cat can bring some sort of disease to an infant and possibly do some harm. My daughter Sophia is 8 months and the reason I was asking is because my husband is wanting to adopt a kitten from one of his co-workers. I just wanted to get some opinions before I told him yes or no. I would love to have a kitten around the house, but I dont want to put sophia's health at risk! Thanks again and I hope to talk to you soon! :)
