Several years ago, I saw a news report on a man that couldn't sleep anymore and died because of it. I don't remeber any details at all. Like I said, it was a long time ago...probably 10 years or so. When I asked my physician, she replied that she had never heard of it and said no one has ever died of lack of sleep. Does anyone remember anything about that?
P.S. The reason I ask is that I had sleep anxiety and thought maybe that was why...

He wasn't all that old. I remember him being in his 40's or 50's.

I've never heard of anyone dying because of no sleep. Although I've heard that if you dont get a proper amount of sleep it does shorten your life. I dont think though that it would shorten it to that extreme.

Yes... just these past few years.
Of course, they are saying it's from lack of movement.
I know this board doesn't like links, so here's the stories for you:

MAN DIES PLAYING VIDEO GAMES AT CAFE
A 24-year-old South Korean man died after playing computer games nonstop for 86 hours, police said yesterday.
The jobless man, identified by police only by his last name Kim, was found dead at an Internet cafe in Kwangju, 260 kilometres southwest of Seoul, they said.
Quoting witnesses, police detective Oh Myong-sik in Kwangju said the man had been virtually glued to the computer since late last Friday and had no decent sleep and meals.
The man collapsed in front of the counter early yesterday but soon regained consciousness. He then went to the toilet where he later was found dead, the police officer said.
Initial investigation ruled out the possibility of murder, police said. An autopsy was planned.
South Korea is among the world's most Internet-savvy nations with more than half of its 47 million people having access to the Internet. South Korea has some 22,000 Internet cafes, also known as PC rooms.
Many PC rooms are open 24 hours, but no minors are allowed after 10 pm."

MAN DIES PLAYING VIDEO GAMES FOR 32 HOURS STRAIGHT
A 27-year-old Taiwanese man died yesterday after playing video games in a cyber cafe for 32 hours continuously.
Lien Wen-cheng arrived at the cyber cafe in Fengyuan in central Taiwan at 10.30pm on Thursday and played video games non-stop, pausing only to go to the toilet, police said.
At 7am on Saturday, a staff member found Lien foaming at the mouth and bleeding from the nose on the floor of the cafe's toilet.
"They rushed him to hospital but he was already dead," local police said.
Police suspect Lien died from exhaustion, having sat in the same position for too long.

Jessthemess,
I know exactly what you are talking about. Several years ago, I watched a documentary about a gentleman who was having trouble falling to sleep. Eventually, it got so bad that he was hospitalized. The drugs he was given to help him sleep stopped working and he went insane from sleep deprivation. It took like months or a year for him to die. That had to be horrible.

I remember that news story. I think it was on 20/20 or something. It was called "fatal familial insomnia." It is a genetic disorder in which the brain loses its ability to sleep, and sufferers eventually die from it. But don't worry, it is really rare!l

Lack of sleep cannot kill a human. However, that being said, being in the same position for 86 hours straight could possibly kill you. I didn't get to examine the body, and don't know what I'd be looking for if I did.
In Newsweek, I believe last issue (can get the date if you like), there was a fascinating article about dreaming, or REM sleep. Among other things, it emphatically stated that rats can die from a lack of sleep, but that people could not. It DID however point out that lack of REM sleep does produce several forms of psychosis.
There is a rare brain disorder where the brain does not require any sleep. I am not sure if it is the same brain disorder, as I can't remember the technical name for this one. The man interviewed had never slept, even as a child. (He was 56 years old at the time). To verify, researchers were posted around the clock on this man for 6 months. During those 6 months, he never stopped even for a wink of sleep. However, in most people sleep is quite neccessary for sane and rational function.
JM
P.S. My personal record of going without sleep is 109 1/2 hours (approximately). However, I was not in the same position constantly; I got up and moved around, ate, drank, etc.

I've not heard of anything like that... I suppose with those two men mentioned here on the boards, that it was a combination of lack of sleep as well as lack of nourishment.
You can, however, die to problems secondary to not sleeping. How?
Lack of sleep puts stress on your heart. Your body sleeps so that it can "rest" and replenish. When you don't sleep, whether it is due to fear of sleeping, insomnia, etc., you can develop other medical problems related directly to the lack of rest your body needs.
There are many different articles in which you can read via the Internet about this. Also, if you are having problems sleeping, tell your doctor. He/she might feel the need to send you to a sleep disorder clinic for further testing and observations.
