Anyone have any ideas on how to get my son to sleep? He will fall asleep easily in our arms, but once we try to move him or lay him down, the movement wakes him up. He is not fond of sleeping on his back and much prefers the stomach, but I won;t leave him at night that way so I always put him on his back and all he does is fall asleep for about 10 minutes, then wake up making loud grunting noises and pulls himself into a ball then he cries and then falls back to sleep.. this is usually on going all night. Any adivce on what I can do here?? Mary Jane

It happens to most new moms you are not alone! It will pass
His crib may be cold, so either cover it up or use a heating pad and them remove right before you lay him down, we went thru this for 2 months NO SLEEP so I know how you feel, she finally just got used to it.
He may have gas, so you may want to call your Dr and see if you can give him gas drops, they work wonderful
usually when they pull themselves into a ball and grunt they have gas.

good luck to you!

The previous poster had some excellent ideas. Most babies do not like to sleep on their backs (I figured this out after having two during the tummy sleeping era and one after BTS) so you could try one of the following:
1. Let him sleep in his carseat (often they do just as well there as they do on their tummies).
2. Let him sleep in his swing (Fisher Price makes a portable one which cradles the baby's entire body).
3. Let him sleep in his bouncyseat.
4. Prop him on his side.
5. Swaddle him tightly in a light blanket
6. Sleep with him.
7. Go ahead and put him on his tummy and get an angel care monitor for under the crib mattress, which might give you peace of mind.
Just for your info, back to sleep has reduced the number of infant deaths due to SIDS, but no one really knows what causes it and it is extremely rare, even for newborn tummy sleepers (that statement comes right from the AAP). According to Dr. Sears the rate of SIDS for back sleepers is 1 in 1500 and for tummy sleepers, about 1 in 1000.

Hi Happymom2b! I have had the same experience with Clay where he has gas pains and wakes up only to fall asleep again. I don't pick him up, just watch him and it seems to pass. I've also propped him up with a couple of receiving blankets rolled in a tube--one on each side to prop him up on his side to sleep. This seems to help the odd time, but I don't do it often. I also have taken him into bed with us to sleep and it works like a charm. I think it's the closness of my body to his. I only do this if he is really fussy, because I don't want to make a habit of it, but it works almost immediately. Clay is only 3 wks 5 dys old, but he sure likes to sleep with Mommy and Daddy!

Hope things go much better for you soon. We all need as much sleep as we can get right now. Take Care,

Mary Jane, after five weeks of being here with Janicia, I've learned quite a bit about the way she likes to sleep. For one, warmth is a MUST! She does not like to be cold, or even a little chilly when she sleeps. She also doesn't like to lay on her back. Putting her on her side helps at times, but I let her sleep in her carrier right now. And I have to rotate her in that as well. Babies can't move around to adjust themselves as good as we can, so I put her down a different way each time she goes to sleep. And I only put her in the bed with me when she wants to nurse herself to sleep...and nothing else. But she seems to do fine on her back then.
