View Full Version : The reason behind the low HIV infection rate in the Middle East.

So ok, I am touring the Arabian gulf region with my mom to see how my old man is doing(he works in the Army), did visit couple of countries around Dubai, Bahrain and now we're in Kuwait, I was surprised by the fact that almost NO ONE is worried about HIV, no one even bothers to get tested, I asked few around and they said HIV doesn't exist in the middle east!

I wondered how it could not exist when prostitution is almost everywhere in Dubai, the prostitutes are mostly russian tourists and in Kuwait almost 90% of the young males are homosexuals who have no idea what a condom is.

Anyway I met some locals in Kuwait few days ago including a doctor whose specialized in blood diseases, I brought up the HIV subject and was surprised by the education they get here; they're given VERY basic information at school about HIV such as you get from premarital sex and drug use and then four years later you die. There is NO sex education whatsoever at schools, bringing up the sex subject is like commiting sin to them, they just give the students religion classes that tells them the same thing as above- premarital sex is forbidden and you can get diseases from it thinking that would stop people from having sex.

To summarize and cut the whole HIV-investigation short I discovered the following:

-IV drug use is almost as common as smoking cigs between the young generations and the fact that the majority are REALLY rich around here makes obtaining heroin and cocain really easy.
-Casual unprotected sex is like a normal daily thing, whether it's with a prostitute or another male, it doesn't seem to worry anyone.
-No one BOTHERS with any symptoms that they may have had as long as they disappear few days later.
-If one is suspected to be HIV+, s/he is called diseased and would be avoided by everyone.

Now to the testing part, a lot of people FEAR and FORGET the fact of testing because they get qaurantined if one is tested positive!

And to make things even worse, the doctor told me stories of some cases where some married men traveled to thailand, had a bit of 'fun' there, got back home and ended up infecting their spouses and possibly their kids, this resulting in a whole family-qaurantine.

And they say there is no/low infection rate there, huh!

I was really disgusted of how people with diseases are treated, I am not sure if I want to know if they get treated in the qaurantine, it's all one big mess that no one knows about, not yet at least.

That is fascinating information and to us in the western world is almost unbelievable. Thanks for that information, it really makes you think how lucky we are living in a civilised western society (yes Australia is very civilised .... lol)

Australia is heaven compared to this place, I was in Australia 3 months ago, I stayed there(sydney and melb) for about five months, I had my first risky encounter there and that encounter is the main reason why I started lurking around this forum. :)

I'm another person from Australia (Sydney). Longwaysouth, I've read somewhere that there are 20 thousand people infected with HIV in Australia and out of those 20,000, most of them are guys. There might be like 1,500 infected chicks in Australia i think. What do you think?

Hi Inthebox

Nice to see another one of us in here. Yep I think that your stats are pretty much on the mark. From what I hear, only about 15000 in our country but your info might be more up to date. We have about 900 new infections each year and yes the number of chicks is low. If you take it on percentages though (based on our population of only 20 million), we are pretty much on a par with the US.

I heard that it is because of the Muslim custom to circumcise the males and they say that is one factor for lower transmission of HIV. But, I think it is baloney. South Africa has a high circumcision rate, but it is also one of the most highly infected HIV nation in the world.

I did leave the girls alone :) HOWEVER I plan on going back there once I am done with uni. I loved the tennis open tourny and the grandprix in melb. :bouncing:

I don't see how circumcision can play a role in transmission, where did you read this?

Hey Avron, Have u done a blood test yet? Ehehe How did u go? I'm sure you would be fine.. If u had a risky encounter with a chick, Your probably aight. Hmm To Be near the exact target, I think theres about 1,200 chicks out there infected with HIV in Australia. Out of those maybe 1,200, In melbourne there were probably 400 chicks infected with HIV. If u haven't got tested yet, Good luck :) I'm sure your negative.

Ye Longwaysouth, We have 900 new infections each year. In the year 2003, I think out of those 900, 90% of those infected were guys.

Hi Inthebox,
My first risky encounter was actually in Sydney, after I broke up with my ex I picked up some random chick off a club. :(
I developed UTI symptoms down there, a mild sore throat that lasted a bit over a month, stomach being noisy, cold feet and hands, difficulty in breathing, fatigue, white tongue coating, alteration in taste and the list goes on, all of this happened four-five weeks after the encounter.

I did a urine test for UTI's, nothing showed up, the doctor still prescribed doxycycline for me which I was allergic to, then I took zithromax, symptoms didn't improve at all. at that point, I was going MAD from the anxiety.

Anyway after four months I did a blood test, everything was ok, except my liver's enzymes were a bit messed up, one was too high and the other one was low. I assumed it was all the alcohol I had when I was there(I blame the aussie government for allowing 18yrs old drink. :D )

After the tests were done I felt relieved, most of the symptoms disappeared by themselves except the cold hands and feet. :)
