I just would like to know what types of things are common in kids with ADD. I suspect my son has it but haven't gotten a lot of family support regarding this to back me up. He does okay in school but teachers have to get his attention alot also they say alot of times he is pretty well behaved but when he is not he is terrible and gets in a lot of trouble. He is 7 yrs old and doesn't stop all day my kids have always had a bedtime of 8 pm which the other 3 go to bed fine but he is up for like 3 hrs later and I am afraid to go to sleep myself not knowing what he might do when I am asleep (I am not worried about him hurting anyone but himself). Also after that he is usually up and going at 6 am. He has always been this way and there are so many other things. I just wanted to know about some other peoples experiences with children with ADD. By the way he was also born 7 wks preemie and has always had problems with bright lights and crowded places. I don't know how to keep his attention to get him to do anything and his older 9 yr old brother ends up feeling like he is always having to do things himself that he should be getting help with. Any ideas....

My daughter, who is 9, was diagnosed at the age of 3 and prescribed medication at the age of 4. ADHD and ADD kids are not disobedient or bad, they have trouble focusing and concentrating. I would hold my daughters face still in my hands to explain things to her and she could not look at me straight in the eyes because she could not focus on anything for more than a second. Her eyes would actually be looking at everything but me. She would trip over things right in front of her because she was thinking about where she was going instead of where she was at. I do not suggest medicating if the teachers are not requesting it. My daughter has had horrible ramifications from taking medications and switching medications. Long term effects of medication can lead to other problems. My daughter now has kidney stones which I attribute to the Concerta she was on. I voluntarily took my daughter off of her medication this summer. ADD and ADHD children are also very talented. They are able to multi task and excel in things they are interested in. To me listening to music, doing homework, and talking on the phone is too much for me to do at one time, but it actually helps my daughter to focus. Children with this disorder excel in sports that require attention to multiple things. They excel in music, whether singing or playing difficult instruments such as the drums, guitar or violin. I hope this helps you.
