I am a 50 year old male. I have slightly elevated iron at 186. The remainder of my lab report is normal. I've never had elevated iron before. Within the last 6 months I've been eating a great deal of red meat. If I don't have hemachromatosis will I be able to reduce my iron count to normal by simply cutting out red meat from my diet?

There is iron in a lot of foods. It is also more easily absorbed when you have vitamin c with it, so you could avoid eating those together. You might want to get tested for hepatitis c. Slightly iron count is a possible symptom of that.

Another way of reducing total iron and doing something very generous is donating blood. The screening process will eliminate any health problems that might exist as well and the best that can happen is that you are able to help some one else. The other best thing is that if there is an underlying problem causing the iron overload, it might be identified so that you do not spend a great deal of money figuring out what to treat.
