View Full Version : Question- Extracted Abcessed Tooth

Hi...I had my tooth extracted 2 wks ago, and it was infected and had an abcess on the gum on top of the bad tooth and was draining....I still have a small, sore area up on my gum and every once in awhile there is a small amount of drainage coming out...I did call the oral surgeon office and the girl seemed to think I needed to keep rinsing with warm salt water and it would eventually clear up...I asked about needing antibiotics and she said no...Anyone else experience this, and know how long it takes until that would totally disappear? Thanks!

 my first question is were u on an antibotic before and after the procedure?? sounds a little weird that a dentist would even pull a abcessed tooth that is infected to begin with. usually the give u antibotics before and after to clear the infection..but if the doctors office wont give them to you out smart them and call your dr and tell them whats going on with the tooth and im sure they will give you some antibotics to help u out..yes keep up with the salt water that will also help to..best of luck theresa

Yes, I was on an antibiotic for 2 wks before the tooth was pulled...The oral surgeon told me I didn't need any after the tooth was out....So, now I'm not sure...I went back for a recheck and he said everything looked fine, and it would resolve itself with just rinsing with the warm salt water...The reason they pulled it was cos I was in alot of facial pain, and swollen glands, and the antibiotics were not helping at this point...Just thought I would see if anyone else had a similar experience..
Thanks!

I had one bad tooth extracted, it had abcess, the antibiotics didn't work and I was in pain. So my dentist told me to remove it immediately.
Everything went well. After 2 weeks now, I feel something is not right, maybe swollen around that area. Don't know why.

Maybe you should go back to your dentist for a recheck, cos mine was not getting any better, and I went back to the oral surgeon again..He took an xray and said he saw something way up in there, but could not tell what it was... I had to have surgery where he cut into the gum to remove it and it was a piece of dead bone lodged up in there...I had stitches in my gum and it was sore for only about a day or so...I got the stitches out in a week, and have had no problem with it since...

Thanks! I'll go to my oral surgeon to check tomorrow.
