Hi,

Enzymes are complex proteins that induce chemical changes within the body or organs (breaking down fats, proteins, starches, sugars...etc). There is a normal range for specific enzymes in different organs (which can be tested in the blood). If they are increased then that's a sign that something's going on in a specific organ.

If a person is on a medication, example for cholesterol....liver enzymes must be checked regularly. If there's an increase in specific enzymes, the med might have to be stopped and another one tried. Severely increased enzymes can mean serious disorder or disease in an organ.

Hope this helps,
quincy
