Hi all,

Katie will be Sweet 16 on the 26th and Mike and I would like to get her something special, to mark this time in her life. Especially after having surgery and all.

We already got her a bunch of stuff to do a scrapbook for her surgery journey and I'm at a loss for something really SPECIAL...she's not a big jewelry fan and she's not a clothing fanatic. Yah, if you can believe that! She's very down to earth, spiritual, and not materialistic. She does have a crucifix ring that she wears everyday that we got her for her 8th grade graduation, but thats it.

I'm looking for something that will help commemorate her "new" beginning...I would appreciate any ideas...

Thanks a bunch!
Vicki

If she really likes that crucifix ring maybe a crucifix necklace to go with. I know you said she didn't like jewelry but it might work. I'm not in touch with my teenage side anymore...ok.. maybe MY teenage side but not the teenagers of today.LOL

(for some reason I must not have read enough, I though Katie was way younger then 16..LOL)

There's a couple of things I did for my daughters that they really thought were great -

I bought a birthday card and had absolute strangers sign it. The mailman, the fedex guy, the cashier at the grocery store, some guy standing in line with me, etc.

Another thing I did with a card (can you tell I was a poor single mom?) was mail the same number of cards as their birthday. For the 16th birthday they'd get 16 cards. In each card I wrote down something I loved about them. They could be things as small as "I love the freckle you have on your right earlobe". Everyone needs to know that they're special and this is a good way of doing it. (each daughter still has all of her cards - they're 28 and 22)

Hope these ideas help!

wow vicki.....you have me on that one. . mine are little so ANY new toy has them happy for a day and the box even longer. :D

have you maybe asked katie waht it is she would really love to do. i know there isnt much she can probably do at this point, but even a party wiht friends can be the world to someone. or even make a book out some of the web postings here. may work for her scrap book as well.

this just popped in. have you ever looked into maybe a plaque with the meaning of her name or something along that line. try the things remembered web site. i know when i got married i was scoping for ideas and saw alot of things i liked for other occations. or i have also seen things...they are called friendship lights. do a search on those words and you should get a list of places that have them on the web. they have them for hope, faith, mother, daughter, sister, friends, etc. the poems attached to them are absolutaly precious. they sell them at hallmark stores too. some of the sites ;) (giftwinds) ;) have it so you can acually read the poems. they may not cost much but the sayings are worth far more than words can say. if i can find one i will put it on here some how.

cassie is the same day as well as cassie so as katie is turning 16, cassie will be 2, so i will be singing happy b-day to her as well. :jester:

does she wear a medic alert bracelet? i met this girl w/ diabetes who hated her bracelet... for her birthday her mom had custom made a GORGEOUS bracelet with a medic alert tag on it.

my sister is very down to earth and such also... for her sweet 16 i got her a miniature japanese rock garden and a 'lucky' bamboo tree. I bought a stand that matched her bed that the tree sat on w/ a shelf under it where the garden went. This is kind of what the tree looked like...hers was in a terracotta pot and a lil bigger: here (http://www.redenvelope.com/re/gifts/product_display/product_information.jsp?nc=99794&BV_SessionID=@@@@1351894401.1090041290@@ @@&BV_EngineID=cccjadclmkjeekicefecefedfgfd fmg.0&refPg=%2fproduct_display%2fgift_results. jsp&bct2=occasion&bcp2=1&bcm2=1%24%24-8031&bct5=good+luck&bcp5=4&bcm5=29$$%2Foccasion%2Fgood+luck@@30$$-10001@@31$$16&catOid=-10001&oid=10037839)

I got a two stoned birthstone ring for my 16th. It was antique looking, and I wore it for many many years until it was too small. I considered it my Signature jewelry along with the necklace I got for graduation. I still have the ring. Phoebe

Thank you all for the great ideas! I have a couple in mind and will share with you as to what they are later tonight. We are headed off to one of 8 baseball games in the next 10 days! Trying to finish out the season with a bunch of rain make ups! We'll be tired of BB once this week is over! The mosquitoes have been RIDICULOUS!!!

Talk to you all soon,
Vicki

Hi Vicky

There are so many good ideas here! I'm sure she has a wonderful Bible, maybe some kind of cover, bookmark etc, to go with it. To tie in with her "new" beginning. I think the one thing my kids cherish is their Bible. The one thing they take care of. I know you are enjoying the baseball games. My son played football and baseball since first grade. He graduated this year and it will seem so funny not to have a football player to watch! We'll still watch the games since Bonnie will be cheering. Tell Katie Happy Biirthday.

Debbie

One of my husbands favorite jokes to go with Katie's new beginning and your son's baseball.

Do you know what God's favorite sport is?
Baseball - He starts the Bible out with In the BIG INNING!

Hello all,

Thanks again for the wonderful ideas!

I spoke with Mike last night and we are going to get her two special things, besides our 'regular' gift.

#1: We are going to get her a "Past, Present & Future" 3 stone ring. Two rubies with a diamond in the middle. The diamond representing clearity and "hope" (that will be in the "present" position and rubies being her birthstone)

#2: I am also looking for a special poem by Helen Steiner Rice to have framed. One that has a spiritual theme that relates to her journey over the last year or years. Something that has to do with perseverance, positive attitude and God's plan for Katie. I am reading a book of her poetry and if anyone knows of a special one, please let me know. She was an amazing poetry writer.

So this seems to be where we are headed. Her birthday is the 26th, but the big party is Aug. 8th. So, I do have some time to get this together. PHEW!
Good thing ha? The poetry/framing will be the hardest. If I can't get that done in time, we'll mention that it is "a work in progress".

Thanks again!

P.S. Still thinking about sending the 16 cards! I may do that as well. I should have sent them starting 16 days ahead of her birthday though. Hmmmm...still time before the actual party though!

I love your ring idea. It will mean alot to her. Afraid I can't help out in the poetry though, haven't much time to read anymore.... what i would do for a good poetry book though, maybe someday (lol)

Art.. I absolutely love the card idea!!!!!!!!! Sometimes simple means the most :)

Plenty of time, no stressing!!!!! (yet)

Hi all!

Katie's party was on Sunday and it was a SUPER day! It was 80 degrees, sunny and a light breeze. Just enough to keep the yellow jackets away from our food and the mosquitoes from our ankles! ;)

Katie's ring turned out BEAUTIFUL and she loves it! 2 rubies flanking a diamond (past, present, future) with a tasteful thinner gold band with cut outs on the sides. It is very appropriate for her age. Not gaudy at all. Cute! She chose the ring setting, got measured and didn't see the ring until she opened it on Sunday.

My mom also gave her a matted and framed bible verse, Jeremiah 9:11. Her favorite verse. It is beautiful as well. She also received gift cards and savings bonds.

It was a wonderful celebration and she had all but 2 pages finished in her scrapbook. It is turning out great!

Just wanted to share some warm fuzzies...hope all is well with you guys!

Vicki

Vicki and Katie, So glad you had a great time. It will be a day your family remembers forever. I mentioned that a two stoned birthstone, July, was my 16th birthday present too (also yellow gold), and that I considerded it to be my Signature jewelry along with the necklace I got for graduation. That necklace was my diamond whereas Katie's three stones are in one piece. It sounds beautiful. Same stones. Unreal! If she feels the same about hers as I did mine, she will cherish it forever.
