Hello, I hope I am in the right place. My husband has recently had 3 blood tests. All 3 were slightly elevated(WBC) The first time he had a lump under his armpit and his PCP said he believed it was an ingrown hair infection and put him on an antibiotic. The lump disappeared the WBC is still the same. Now the doc wants to send him to a hematologist. Should I be worried? I know I shouldnt be but he seems to be concerned enough to send him to this specialist. What does a hematologist look for? I would appreciate any help and if I am in the wrong place could you lead me to the right one? Thanks!! lg

Of course a lot of hematologists are also oncologists as well. But, that does not mean that the doctor thinks your husband has any type of cancer. There are infections that are also treated by hematologists. The reason any specialist is called in is becuase they have more information about specific areas and can spend more focused time and testing. It does not mean that the problem is too serious to be treated. I have anemia, I was seen by a hematologist who tested me and then my primary GP continues to treat me according to the hematologist directions. Try not to worry until you have more information.
Hi Merimac, Thank you for responding back and making me feel better even though I am concerned. He goes to the hematologist this Friday the 6th. I will let you know what the doc says. You are very reassuring. It means alot that you cared enough to respond. God bless you. Lynn

I wish for you good news.
Hi Marimac, My hubby had his appt. yesterday and not today. When they did his blood work it was all normal. We were happy about that. The doc was concerned but not too over concerned but below his left armpit the lymph nodes were swollen and also the lymph nodes on the right lower side of his stomach. My hubbys father died in 84 of hodgkins disease so this doc is being very thorough. He has Jack scheduled for a CT scan this coming Wed. I was going to ask the doc if there could be something cancerous with the lymph nodes like they are and wouldnt his WBC be high if it were? I know you are or may not be a doc but do you have any ideas about this? I would appreciate anything you may know. Thanks again for being so nice and hope to hear from you soon. God bless. Lynn
