Hey everyone!!! I'm getting a root canal done tomorrow. I've been in alot of pain, and I was wondering like what all they're gonna do, and if they are gonna give me any anisthetic. If you know any details, please write and let me know! Thanks soo much!!! :confused:

Do an internet search on something like root canal faq and you will be able to find TONS of sites with very detailed descriptions.

You would need to talk to your dentist about the use of any anesthesia as this varies from dentist to dentist. The first thing they will do is numb the tooth up. Then they drill a hole in the crown of the tooth to expose the canal. The dentist will use a bunch of little files to clean out and shape the canals. Once the dentist is sure he has cleaned all of the canals out completely, he will fill the canals with gutta percha which I thought looked like grey putty. This stuff is prerolled into tiny cone-shaped pieces so that it gets all the way to the tip of the root. If you are having a crown placed, your dentist may then place a post in the tooth to help support the crown and then take impressions and place the temp. crown. Otherwise, your dentist will just place a filling in the tooth. Your dentist may take an exray or 2 to make sure that he is getting all the way to the tip of the root, particularly if the root has a bend in it (I had lots of twists and turns in mine - nothing in my mouth ever cooperates :rolleyes: ).

While root canals have gotten a bad wrap, you will find that it is not quite as big a deal as people build it up to be. I had 5 at once after breaking my jaw and other than just being bored, it was not much of a problem. I did have a bit of discomfort after, but advil took care of it completely.
