Hello everyone!!

My husband was recently in a accident. He was at a dead stop on his motorcycle when a mini van slammed into him causing him to hit the car infront of him that was waiting to make a left turn. He accident was horrilbe and he is very blessed to have only substained a compressed T12 anterior segment 10% fracture. It could have been much much worse give the circumstances.

My husband is home and doing well, my question is has anyone else had this type of injury? And if so what was your recovry time and long term affects from the injury?

We have been told he won't requier surgery and should heal fine but could have arthritis later in life (he's 30 now). Any info anyone has to share would be appriciated.

Hi,

Same kind of accident. I was a passenger on a motorbike and as we were slowing down a car slammed into the back of us. I had an unstable compressed fracture (30%) of L1 (the one below T12).

I spent 2 and a half weeks in the hospital, For the first two weeks I had to lie on my back all the time and wasn't allowed move around. I then had a brace which I wore for 6 months.

It's been just over 2 and a half years now. I still have pain but most of the time it's bareable. It varies from an ache to stinging pain. Every month or so it flares up for 3+ days, but anti-inflammatory help to keep this under control.

I have reduced flexibility in my back, and can't lift anything heavy. Overall a lot has improved since I first damaged my spine. After the while you start having the same type of pain all the time so you know the best exercises and positions to help ease this pain. I find that stretching exercises are the best for easing the pain.

The longterm diagnosis is that I will always have back pain. This mightn't be the case with your husband as the compression is less. Also I damaged the posterior of the vertebrae so it doesn't sit correctly any more and move around a little, this is what causes the majority of the pain, and the flare ups as it rubs directly with T12.

Hope this helps
Regards
