View Full Version : how low can a eyeglass prescription go?

I'm 26. I've just had an eye test and my lens presciption is -7.00 diopters in both eyes.

Does anyone know what sort of number should lead to me getting worried?

I asked an eye doc this, and he said he has seen some as low as -24. He told me that prescriptions never end. There is no limit to how low it can go.

that's incredible!

I know that +10.00 is the equivalent of a magnifying glass, so -24.00 must be the equivalent of an inverted microscope.

I went to the opticians earlier and lenses for goggles only go down to -7.50. I didn't realise it could be so much lower for glasses.

Are there many people with worse eye sight than me? I've never met a glasses wearer that haven't put on my pair and yelled 'oh my gawd'.

That's somewhat high, but not alarmingly so (we say "high" not "low" because it is a high degree of myopia, or near-sightedness). Theoretically, I suppose it could go on forever until you're categorized as blind.

I'm guessing this wasn't your first eyeglass prescription, mainly because no one walks around at -7 oblivious to the fact that they can't see :) Did your prescription increase much from the last time? You're at an age now where most people's prescriptions would be pretty much stable.

I've been wearing glasses for 15 years, but I've never had an eye test when I haven't been told that my sight has deteriorated.

how old is your best friend? Does the glasses that he / she has work for her and do they look ok?

She's 38 and she doesn't get the sharpest vision with glasses. She has to get custom-made contacts and they work pretty well, though.

As for how the glasses look--well, a bit odd. I know she gets the thinnest lenses possible, but even those stick out beyond the frame some. If you look around at people who wear glasses, those with high prescriptions have lenses that look a little funny. And they also make your eyes look smaller. Probably not what you wanted to hear :)

Albo - Don't worry - i'm in the mid 6's and i've had several friends who are more nearsighted than me. The key is that an extremely nearsighted person is at higher risk for other nasty eye ailments, so it's important to see an opthalmologist YEARLY for a complete exam including eye dilation. That way, if there are any problems that develop, they can catch them and treat them early.

A couple of tips ... the smaller diameter your glasses frames are, the thinner your lenses will be. This will reduce the "coke bottle" lens look (very attractive indeed!). Also, make sure that you request the thinnest possible material (it's worth paying extra) and rolled edges. Contact lenses are also a good option, but i've found with extreme nearsightedness that contact lenses don't give me the crisp, clear vision that glasses do. So, i only wear contact lenses occasonally.

I am -19

Biggest problem is women seem to hate it and contacts is not an option for me :(

I have even heard about -35 but never seen it.
