I thought I'd share my experiences with tonsil and adnoid removal I had yesterday afternoon. My twin sister had hers out last year and a good percentage of my family members have had theirs out as well. Everyone was telling me how awful it was, not it would be a different sort of pain, me grandma even told me I'd 'have a knife in my throat'. Aside of all that, the experience has been very good. It just feels like I have a bad case of strep. The hospital called to check on me and they got a laugh out of the fact I had some potato chips when I got home last night. I'm just one tylonal with codine and antibiotics, both are which are liquid and actually taste very good. My only problem is that I'm really swollen, but I've been keeping ice on my face to help. My sister was in bed for days, I'm up looking for things to do. She made some rice krispie treats yesterday and I'm dying to convince my mom I can have some! Anyway I guess everyone handles things differently but to me, this has been no different than the awful strep cases I've had over the past few months. I'll post in a few days when the scabs some, that's when my sister had really bad bleeding but since I'm eating a lot I hope that won't heppen. I'm just amazed at how well I'm doing. Yay!

wow, you are EXACTLY who i need to talk to right now, hahaha. i have my surgery on tuesday, and it seems like all i hear are horror stories, so its good to hear an uplifting one, lol. i'm hoping that this is the cause of my pain to begin with. i have pain in my throat, but it seems a lil low to be my tonsils, even though my tonsils hurt bad too. how far down your throat do you think your tonsils can affect. i feel it on the left side, next to my esophagus. it comes and goes when the tonsils are infected, which is why i'm pretty certain it hasta do with them. i also seem to get lil infections on my tongue whenever my tonsils get infected. i don't think i have ever been this excited to get something cut out of me, haha. i know i'll be in pain, i know i won't be able to do anything for a while, but crap, if i never hafta look, or feel my tonsils again, ITS WORTH IT! good luck with the rest of your recovery, and please post back and keep me updated. i'm sure i'll start a thread on tuesday of my situation, so i'm sure we'll talk soon.

I'm not sure exactly where to put this so that most people will see it. I have to say, I read all these boards prior to tonsillectomy and was TERRIFIED!!! But, since I'm a teacher and can't be continually dealing with illness like this, I 'sucked it up' and went in right before spring break.

I am on day 8 and have not had any pain that is worse than any of my sore throats! I have felt great, eaten lots of jello, applesauce, pushed fluids, etc. I have gone out, run errands, gone to the movies, etc. Nothing too strenuous, but this has not affected me in the ways I thought it would! Today I started mac and cheese, pudding, and scrambled eggs. Slightly solid!

This will SO be worth it if I don't get sick as much! I know there's a lot of scary stuff posted, but please know that my experience has been fine! I'm 28, good health (other than tonsillitis!) slightly overweight, and other than that very normal. I think, but can't prove, that the steroid dexamethosone that he prescribed me reduced nausea and post-op bleeding - I had NONE of that. If you ****** dexamathosone tonsillectomy and you can see some studies.

Plus, I started on the Lortab (Hydrocodone) on Weds. night for pain but by Sat. I was majorly itchy all over. The dr. said it was the hydrocodone and to switch to liquid Tylenol, which is over the counter. I was skeptical about taking Tylenol which can barely cure a headache for me, but it has been great and I have used it for the past 4 days, and today I switched to pill form.

Anyhow, my experience has been fine, and most people told me to stop freaking out about what I read because the people who **** about it are going to be the people who had/have bad experiences. So, I thought I would come here and tell you all about how wonderful it has been! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions/reservations. I plan to come back here and report lack of tonsillitis next winter. I usually get it in the winter so we'll have to wait and see...

I can't even tell you how comforting it is to read a post like this! I am scheduled for tonsillectomy on 3rd April next Tuesday and am beyond terrified by all of the horror stories.

Thanks again for reassuring many nervous people that it's not always a nightmare. It's good to be prepared for the worst but nice to know the worst may not necessarily happen!

Good luck with the rest of your recovery!

So Im on day 2 of my tonsillectomy and im feeling great! Oh, i'm on my girlfriends account by the way, which she's a great nurse!!! Ok, so we read lots about how painful the surgery is, and well, i went in really scared. We got there, talked to a few nurses, the doctors and everyone re-assured i would be ok. I got my little gown on, IV in, a kiss from my girlfriend, and walked back to the operating room. Everyone was super nice to me, i laid down on the table, got all comfy, breathed in some pure oxygen, and next thing i new I was being waked up by a nurse. At this point, i was told i would feel the most horrible pain, but instead i was pleasantly surprised and felt good, this is because the doctor numbed up my whole throat and i couldnt feel anything in my throat. The nurse's were super nice and asked if i felt any pain, and gave me some more drugs. After just laying around for about 45 minutes, having some sprite and a popicle, the nurses finally wheeled me back to the changing room and my girlfriend was there waiting for me with a huge smile on her face, it was such a relief to see her. At that point, i got dressed and walked out to another recovery room and sat in a recliner and finished my 3rd IV bag and got one more percacet. The nurse sat down with me and went over a bunch of do's and don'ts, emergency stuff in case of bleeding, and that i need lots of rest.

So, i got wheeled out to the car, we went to Target, went and got my percacets and anti-botics, and just went home and went to bed for a few hours.

Oh and by the way, when i woke up from the surgery i was able to talk and i really havent stopped since. Now im on day 2 and feeling good. Ive had jello, pudding, popicles, semi-warm chicken broth, sherbet, and tongiht i tried some warm cream of wheat. So far so good.

Supposedly tomorrow is suppose to get worse, and im hoping against it but who knows. I think so far everything is going great, for having part of my throat removed. I like to look back at it and make sure there is no bleeding. My uvula is swollen and about the size of a quarter, which does make it alittle diffucult to sleep since it covers my throat. It just requires sleeping on my side. And I have a humidifer going since yesterday which is suppose to help keeping my throat moist. Hmmm, and it doesnt hurt to swallow that bad, i have had like 8 glasses of gatorade today and 8 yesterday, im keeping on top of this whole dont get dehydrated thing.

Ok, so i am on percoset right now, so i hope most of this makes sense, i was kind of jumping around with my thoughts. So far this has been a good experience, not horrible like I have read and feared. Oh and my girlfriend is being such a great nurse, that helps out alot.

I got really sick from the hydrocodone so my ENT told me to switch to regular tylenol adult liquid over the counter. I had the SAME reaction as you, I told him that it never helped me before with any kind of pain, what made him think it would help this pain at all when nothing I took would even touch the pain? But I tried it and it actually worked pretty well! Although I think it only lasted about 3 hours at a time, so I was taking it pretty often, but at least it helped!

For those of you who haven't had the surgery yet, definitely stock up on the adult liquid tylenol because in case your prescription pain meds make you nauseated like mine did, the liquid tylenol will help and not make you sick to your stomach.

Another note on the liquid Tylenol, whenever you think you're ready for pill form, it makes life a lot easier. Liquid Tylenol was fine but it had a slight burning as it went down after the scabs fell off. I chopped the pills in two and was able to swallow them fine and now I'm onto the full pills, and down to about every 8 hours, mostly to help eat. My students say that I'm 'so lucky' that I get to eat mac and cheese 24/7...hmmmm

I posted this in another thread, but here's my super mac & cheese recipe that I've been living on, we should have started a thread with recipes to eat!!

1 cup noodles, boil them

Mix:
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup cottage cheese
1 cup sourcream
1 cup sharp cheddar, cut up
1 cup Velveeta, cut up

Mix cooked noodles into above mixture and spread into greased casserole dish. Bake for 45 minutes. Enjoy!!

Tomorrow we're having dinner guests and I'm making the Olive Garden Fettucine Alfredo - yummy!

Glad to hear there are other success stories out there!! Back to work on Monday, it's been a very relaxing spring break!
