My 8 week old boy is quite sick... he has been vomitting for a week now... he can keep some food down, but usually about three times a day, he will literally throw up 2-3 ounces. He also has extremely loose stools... they are like yogurt consitency and watery and sometimes just watery. He has lost over 2 pounds. He was in the hospital for three days and they said his blood work was fine and his ultrasound was fine. Told us to take him home and basically, in a nut shell, deal with it. He is on Isomil soya now as well. He seems to be a happy baby overall, but I can't stand all this diarreah and throwing up. Anyone else ever had this with their infant and what did you do or what happened? Thanks for your help

Have they rule out an allergy to the formula? Have you tried pedialyte to keep him from getting dehydrated? I would call the doctor back, any infant that young, losing two pounds, and still not any better, needs to be referred to a specialist, demand one, especially it they dismiss it to "deal with it", or find another pediatrician.

Did they test his stool for Rotovirus? You can find out alot about this through an internet search. It usually last 3 to 7 days and makes little ones VERY sick. My twin girls had this at 11 months, and one needed to be hospitialized for dehydration. We were in the Peds. office every day from day three through day 8, thats how long my girls had it. To find out if its Rotovirus they need a stool sample. Its pretty contagious, and not uncommon in the first year of life.
It could be the formula, cause thats what we thought when the girls got ill, but the Ped. said it would have maifested a little quicker for my girls, and she recomended the mildest formula on the market, wich is what you already said you are using. Definitly check with the Doc again, rotovirus is REALLY bad, and it was a few weeks before my girls were all back to normal.
Good Luck

Thank you for the responses.... he was on enfamil A+ at first, then they changed it to the Isomil. Does not seem to have made a difference. We were also told to 2 ounces at a time with a burp after 1 ounce. He is very very hard to burp sometimes. It is just so hard on us all. Neither myself or my husband can sleep properly as we are always worried he will throw up when we are sleeping.

Has he had an ear infection? Does he have a fever that spikes and drops? MY daughter got very sick, like your son. I took her to the hospital MANY times and eventually they told me I was paranoid. Well the next day my daughter was in the emergency room and they did a spinal tap, she had spinal meningitis. Her ear infections had spread to her brain and into her spinal fluids. A baby can't tell you the normal symptoms. They said her ears looked fine, her throat looked fine, her chest sounded fine an therfore she was fine. but she wasn't fine. She was only 15 months old and my husband and I were told to prepare funeral arrangements. A friend asked if her church could pray for our daughter,I said yes because I needed a miracle. Two weeks later my daughter was released from the hospital with not one complication left over from this illness the doctors said she would not survive. I knew her recovery was a miracle of God and decided to pay a visit to this church and thank them for their prayers. When I got there, it was different than anything I had ever experienced. I could feel God's presence and it felt good. I realized that I owed thanks to God and when the alter call came I did just that, I thanked him, asked him to forgive me and gave my life wholely to him. It has been a struggle to live a Christian life but without God I was only ruining my life. I thank God everyday for not only my daughter, but for the new life he has given to me and my family.
PLEASE, don't just brush this under the table, mother's know best. Pray for your son, and continue to "bug" the doctors. This is your babies life we are talking about.

I'm sorry to hear about your dilemma with your baby. Unfortunately, my daughter did the vomitting too. Have you introduced any kind of cereal yet? If so, is it rice or oatmeal? Oatmeal is the best because it is harder to vomit. Has your baby been given any meds for reflux? Have you seen anyone outside of your GP? Have you been to a GI yet? How does your son sleep? With a child that vomits all of the time, you are told to NEVER let them sleep on their backs. Also, think about putting a wedge in his crib. If their heads are elevated, it lessens the chance of vomiting. I hope this helps in some way and whatever you do, follow your motherly instinct and do not allow the drs to push you to the side saying that you are paranoid and everything is okay. You know your son. Losing weight at his age isn't acceptable and the drs should be really concerned about it. If they aren't, maybe you should seek a specialist.

Take him to another pediatrician on an emergency basis and get another opinion. This is not normal and needs to be addressed right away.

My daughter was born with a severe umbelical hernia, and after her relase from the hospital, I had the exact same problems. After about 5 different formulas I finally found one that suited her very nicely. Enfalac
Your little one may be lactose intolerant. (I had been running back and forth from home, to doctors for her first 3 months).
Good Luck, Hope your little one feels better soon.

Dear happymom2b,
I had a similar experience with my daughter, although along with the vomiting she also had bloody diarreah which was absolutely terrifying. We were at the ped's office every few days, tried all the milk and soy formulas on the market and nothing worked. Eventually we were referred to a GI who put her through some hideous tests but determined she was allergic to milk and soy and recommended a hypoallergenic formula. Within a couple of days on Nutramagen she was fine (although she did vomit throughout her infancy a bit more than her older brothers). My daughter is now a perfectly healthy 5 yr old.
Your son could just have an allergy, or it may be something else. In either case, if your dr is not concerned about your son's weight loss, find another one as soon as possible!
good luck and i hope your little guy gets better soon!!

My daughter was born with a Malrotated Bowel. Her bowel system went up and down instead of right to left. It made her vomit A LOT. She had surgery at 3 months of age and has been fine ever since. We had to fight with our family dr. to get sent to a ped. and then she sent us to the hospital the same day for admittance and tests. Christie had surgery 2 weeks later.
I agree with others when they say not to ignore this. It's probably just an allergy but you never know. Keep fighting for your child because no one else will!

I know my friends son had the same symtoms and I see your son was in hospital so not sure if they ruled out Pyloric Stenosis its a condition of infancy in which encircling muscles at the end of the stomach enlarge and cause obstrution. Some of the sighns are recurrent vomiting after feedings that become increasingly forcfull, constpation, weight loss and dehydration. (got this out of medical book).Im sure that not all babies have the same symtoms listed but worth looking into .I will be praying for your son and family that he is well soon. Lori

My godchild went through something like that when he was about 8 months old, came to found out he has juvenile diabetes. You said the baby was in the hospital & had lots of tests run, but make sure they checked the baby's blood sugar level. My godson was at the doctors a few times before he finally got so sick he had to be hospitalized at a Children's hospital. The pediatrician kept saying it was an ear infection, then it was just some virus going around. Basically I am saying, get a second opinion. Vomiting that often for that period of time with the loose stools is NOT normal.
Good luck & I hope everything works out okay!

IMO get a second opinion. DS was born with an intestinal blockage, twisting, rotation.. caused by meconium illeus -- he has cystic fibrosis. We were sent to a children's hospital and got wonderful care. While he ended up having major surgery and being hospitalized for several weeks, he was diagnosed immediately. Otherwise sometimes it takes MONTHS to get a diagnosis because the symptoms can be loose, greasy, foul smellling stools -- misdiagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, or reflux. It's not until the child fails to thrive or gets lots of infections.

My son did the same thing. Projectile vomiting was so common that I would put a towel on the floor just in case. My doctor thought he might be allergic to the milk protein (I had tried regular formula and the soy, but nothing could keep it down.) So, we changed to a lactose-free formula. No problems. He still spit up but nothing like before. He's nine months old and we still use the lactose-free formula.

My now 13 year old did the projectile vomiting too for months. He drank so much so fast that it sometimes came back up. I had numerous formula baths. He also had loose watery stools. I switched formula many times trying to get it right and nothing worked. I know now that milk and other milk products give him loose stools still.
My husband's nephew is almost 2 and he had the same problems when he was an infant. My husband's entire family is lactose intolerant. They love their pizza with double/triple cheese and since we live in Wisconsin with lots of dairy products they can't give up the dairy!!!!
Check yours and your husband's family history to see if anyone else has had this and if so what they found to help.

I would definately seek out a pediatric GI. The baby could be suffering from pyloric stenosis (as previously mentioned), delayed gastric emptying, GI dysmotility, and/or GERD. If left untreated, the latter can be detrimental to the child. There are many treatment options depending on the severity of the disorder. My youngest son suffered from all of these, plus other GI complications and required surgical intervention and complete dependence on IV nutrition for two years. It took me many, many trips to the doctor and ER before I finally got someone to take me seriously. He was so desperately ill I just knew he was going to die. He was about 8 months old and only weighed ten pounds. He ended up losing down to 8 pounds before I could get anyone to LISTEN!

My son also has had the same problem. He was diagnosed with a severe reflux disease where the muscle at the top of the stomach is not developed and food cannot stay down. I can't even pick him up without him spitting up. The doctor put him on a med called Axid and now he seems to be a little better but it has not been but a few days. I will post and let you know how it goes if you are interested. But you need to ask if it could possibly be that.It is very common most babies have it to some degree but some cases are worse than others.

Find another or go back to your pediatrition and ask if it could be Reflux( a condition caused by a muscle in the top of the stomach that has not developed properly) The way I know about that is I have a 9 week old and he has been doing the exact same thing for about 3weeks. His doctor just put him on antibiotics. The med is called Axid I am not sure but I think it is working. I can actually pick him up some times and not get spit up on me ,sometimes. Try to lay him on his side while he sleeps that seems to help a little. Also, keep him elevated to prevent anything from coming up.
You may want to write down some things you may notice. Weird noises such as gasping sounds that come out of nowhere and go away, fussiness, and a girgling noise. Inform your doctor of this.Your doctor may not seem all concerned because most babies have this disorder, just some cases are worse than others.

Casper -- You do realize that the post you are referencing is over 2 years old, right??? I'm sure that the original poster has figured out her problem by now...:)
I say this only so that you're not surprised to not get replies back from her...

If the diarreah is caused by a germ, a few sips of this salty drink may help, as it always helps me.
1 quart of water
8 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
I usually half this as only a few sips are needed. It is my guess that the germs feed on the sugar, but take in salt with the sugar, and the salt kills the germ.
Even if the question was posted a long time ago, some may do research on the subject to get this information.
