i had hemorrhoid surgery 4 months ago and am still having some bleeding with bowel movements. i take colace and miralax which the surgeon prescribed. the surgeon said that the surgeon who had done my previous hemorrhoid surgery many years ago took too much anal tissue and my anal canal is very narrow and needs more time to heal. he did do a rectal exam under anesthesia 3 weeks ago and said it looked ok and was healing and has given me until aug 23rd and if i still have some rectal bleeding will send me to a colo rectal specialists. have you ever heard of this type of situation where it might take longer to heal. the surgeon said the bleeding can be caused by scar tissue. he did do a colonoscopy before the surgery and all was ok. I need someone to talk to about this. i still take sitz baths. i have very little discomfort and seldom have pain and try to keep my bowel movements soft. i would appreciate some feedback or someone to talk to. sincerely marg messick

Hi,
I am marg messick and wondered how you are doing? my bleeding has cut down but I still take alot of medicine to help me go. Its going on the 5th month and I see my doctor aug 23rd and if I still am having problems hes sending me to a colo rectal specialists. The surgeon said that the doctor who did the samre surgery many years ago took too much anal tissue and left the canal very narrow and its taking long to heal. we'll see,but its frustrating and discouraging. let me know how you are doing and what medicine do you take to help you. marg

DDN, I will not lie to you---expect pain. Especially your first week. Your first bm will most likely be the most traumatic experience. I had blood all over my walls, ceiling, etc!!!! Just make sure to keep your stools soft, and pain medicine will become your new best friend. Take sitz baths frequently and have a" donut" at home waiting for you. ( a cushion to sit on)IT can be purchased at a home medical supply store. MY first week was so bad because I did not have adequate instructions from my physician who do not communicate well with me at all. It was after the first week that I found out about milk of magnesium (a large dose everynight) and had my pain pills changed to something mush stronger. After that,it got better everyday. YOU CAN DO IT!!!! We are here for you.

Hi, I'm jonz. For me it has been 3 weeks. Still bleeding a bit. But the thing that puzzles me is: some days i have a very strong feeling to go for a b/m. However nothing came out. It's very irritating as you always go to the toilet for nothing. Do anyone have similar problem?

Hey guys... I had hemms removed last summer. It was a nightmare! Alot of pain afterwards and bleeding for about 3 months! Not alot but it was still there and the raw feeling described. It takes alot of time for some people. Most of the time the doctors do not tell you that or how painful it really is! Check with your doctors but I'm sure it will just take time to heal!Good luck!

Ibp35,or marge...I need encouragement here! I had 2 hems. removed, a very "angry fissure" and LIS done 7 weeks ago. I am still having a small amount of bleeding with each bowel movement. I am scared, please tell me this is ok with the amount of work I had done. I sometimes wonder if I resumed my activity level too soon. Dr. said at 2 weeks it was ok to return to the gym to work out with weight machines and jogging. He said it would not affect my healing rate. I worry alot! I was so afraid my many years of rectal bleeding was something bad--"the "c" word. He sent tissue from that area to pathology to assure me it wasn't. I still need reassurance please. Didn't yall both say yall had bleeding for several months after? Thanks so much

Southern Diva,
I know it is very hard not to worry! I even took medication through out my whole ordeal because it was such a disaster! You can read my past posts...but anyway yes I did have bleeding for 3 months after! I changed doctors because the first one, after he made the mess didn't know what was wrong?? Anyway I was bleeding and had this raw feeling for months, she said you are just healing from the surgery and this is a rough surgery and it takes time. She also said some doctors don't tell people the truth about how long the healing really takes! I also had a small fissure during this time. But all in all it took me about 4 months to completely heal. Now I am fine but one tip that I still use is take Metamucil or some find of fiber keep your stools soft this will help and for now maybe use a glob of vaseline before bowel movements this will help too! Be patient healing will come. Just keep in touch with your doctor and don't be afraid to call and ask him what's up?????Good Luck. If you have anymore questions, just ask!

IBP35, I cannot thank you enough for telling me all that you did I feel better knowing that someone else had bleeding for several weeks/months after surgery. MY dr. seemed to act rather surprised at just 4 weeks that I was still bleeding, then again,he has never had surgery!!! My mother told me that I was born "worrying" about things-especially my health! I always assume the worse,so the other night for absolutely no apparent reason,I had bleeding from back "there" where I had my surgery when all I did was pass urine (sorry to sound gross). It scared the living daylights out of me. My husband said it was probably just a minor tear in the incision from the hem. surgery. That is when I became convinced that it must be "something bad",but my husband keeps telling me that the dr. sent the tissure to pathology (I already got a bill from pathology!) and he would have told me if they found something abnormal with the tissue. I try to keep telling myself that! IT will be 8 weeks next Wed. and I see my dr. then. I did have 3 surgeries--2 hems., LIS and fissurectomy,so I guess bleeding is normal, sorry to keep rambling, guess I am just so excited to find someone who has been through the same thing!

Southern Diva,
Your post made me chuckle only because you sound so much like me ! I worry about everything but especially my health. I always have my face in the medical book! Anyway for all that you have been through my guess would be the bleeding is very normal. How long until your pain went away? I was in terrible pain the first week, could hardly walk! When you say bleeding, is it like a couple drops? Don't check your progress daily, do it weekly. Is it better this week than last week? Anyway, your doctor would have found something during your surgery if it were something worse than hemms or fissures. Don't rush your healing you have been through alot. Make sure you get enough fiber and call your doctor if you get worried, that is what he is there for! Drink enough water too! Good luck!

IBP35,thank you once again for your help. I saw my surgeon today for my 8 week follow up. I told him I was still having small amount of blood with every bm. He seemed surprised and then got this bright idea to stick this rather large lighted scope up me right there in the office. It hurt like heck!!! He said he saw a small ulcer or tear that would be causing the bleeding and discomfort. He blamed it on my large daily dose of milk of magnesium. IT keeps my stools very loose. He told me to stop it at once and swithch to citrucel. I had 2 hems. removed,a fissure an LIS so how could I develop another tear is totally beyond me. I got very upset when he called it an "ulcer" because I had read where one man was told he had an ulcer and it turned out to be cancer. I told my dr. this,he knows I worry ALOT! He assured me it was NOT anything but a tear then,he said my sigmoidoscopy was fine and so was pathology from tissue at that area. I am still scared out of mind! H E L P !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Sothern Diva,
You sound exactly like me in regards to my surgery...a NERVOUS WRECK! Please calm down, I know it is hard like I said I took medication. Right after my hemm surgery is when I got my fissure. The thoughts of another very painful surgery made me insane! My hemm surgery was soooooo painful and had to have bowel movements in a sitz bath for a long time. You have been through so much I can't believe your doctor acts suprised from the bleeding! When I finally went to a new doctor she said this long of a recovery is normal with this kind of surgery. She gave me medicine and with alot of prayer the fissure healed up but it took a long time! Go to your doctors office and make him listen to you! If you are this afraid, he needs to listen to you! And this soon after surgery he should not of put anything inside of you. my doctor only exams by looking unless i was put under. If your doctor isn't listening to you go somewhere else! Are you bleeding alot or is it a few drops? Let me know how you are and try to calm down! You will heal, I thought this would go on forever for me but I am fine now. Even so I have a little bit of bleeding every now and then 9 months later! !!! This is a rough surgery.

Thank you for your reply. I was bleeding only a tiny, tiny amount. I followed his regimen yesterday, stopped the milk of mag., started citrucel and metamucil wafers and lots of fruit and vegetables. Well, today, I went to the bathroom, the stupid stuff had made my stool so large and bulky it refused to come out. I had massive amounts of bleeding! It hurt so bad. I called the dr at 10 this morning,he has yet to call me back,I wanted to know should I resume the milk of mag. or continue this torture? I am SO scared, the thought of more surgery scares me to death. He removed a fissure already, how on eart does this keep happening tome?

Southern, Diva,
Are u drinking enough water? I just eat mini wheats for breakfeast, metamucil in the evening and alot of water. This has helped me stay regular and keep my stools soft. Has your doctor called you yet? If you not, u should call him, massive bleeding can't be good. My bleeding was just some drops!Let me know!

Hi,I have been reading through alot of your older post, when did you develop your fissure? That issupposedly what is causing my bleeding. It is better, but still every single time I go to the bathroom.,down to just a small amount. It just scares me! Being the negative thinker I am,I just assume it is "more than just a fissure".Even though he did an anoscope in his office and saw it.In June,he did a proctoscope and sigmoidoscopy when he removed the hems and fissure that I had at that time. I just want to be normal again!!It has only be 9 weeks since all of that.It was the excessive doses of milk of mag that I was taking daily that caused the new fissure. How long was it before you got better? Thanks for being so kind to me,you have made such a difference in my life right now!

Southern Diva,
You are so welcome and I am glad I could help! I know how you feel an dhow frustrating this is. To just feel normal again, right? I was a mess, scared to death of another surgery. The fissure, I believe happened not long after the hemm surgery. I kept bleeding and having pain or like this raw feeling and I switched doctors because my first one kept saying he didn't see anything and acted like I was nuts! The second doc saw it right away. She gave me a cream for it and if that didn't work she would do a botox injection. When I when back after using the cream she said it was just about healed but did the injection anyway. I think the fissure healed because I took vit c, alot of warm baths, kept my stools soft with fiber and the medicine from the doctor. I also prayed alot, you might think that is crazy but the thought of another surgery terrified me! You will get through this, trust me! :bouncing: I felt like it would never end. I even got depressed. People who have not experienced this would not understand. Do yu have painwith bowel movements? Try a warm bath after or even before bed. Keep your stools soft without over doing it and try very hard not to get constipated, that will keep you from healing by reinjuring yourself. I will try to help you as much as I can! Take care & I will pray that you heal!
Ps I still had some bleeding at nine weeks post op but I'm not sure if it was the surgery or the fissure???? I am a negative thinker also, it does not help, try to change it around if you can!

Ibp35,just wanted to thank you for being my "mentor" through all of this horrible experience. Your kind words and replies to me have helped me more than you will ever know. It has been 10 weeks since hems removed, fissure removed and cutting of the muscle (LIS) and I am still having a tiny amount of bleeding.I hope this is normal, the dr did see an "ulcer" aka fissure 3 weeks ago,so maybe that is what is still trying to heal. Also,Marge, are you still around? I read that you were still bleeding at 4 months, how are you doing now?

Southern Diva,
You will be fine!Trust me when I say this takes a long time to heal. Just thinking back, I had my surgery in August and in December I was thinking " I can't believe I am still dealing with this". It was a hard time for me. Did your doctor give you anything for the fissure? If not, ask him for some. I will try to remember what my surgeon gave me. I used it for 3 weeks and went I went back she said it was just about healed. I took alot of warm baths, almost every night and kept my stools soft. I know it is hard but try not to focus on it, that gives it energy. Keep thinking that you are Healing!!! You will. When I went to the doc I told her I didn't think the fissure was healing because it was still raw feeling and a little bit of blood, she said you are still healing from surgery .And that was in december! Be patient a little longer, and ask anything you want, I am here to help you if I can! Thanks again for the kind words!

IBP35,thank you once again ! This thing has really wreacked havoc with my emotions. My dr. gave me suppositories for the fissure. I have been using them, taking sitz baths and trying to incorprate lots of fiber in my diet.Yesterday-No blood,it was the best day of my life! Today, for whatever reason-I had bright red blood on t.paper.It totally freaked me out and sent me in a downward spin of tears and fear all over again. It has been 10 weeks since internal and external hems. were removed. He also cut out a fissure and did the sphincterotomy..DO you think it is one of the incisions that keeps opening up and becoming a fissure? I am just so afraid! I ask my husband ALL day long-what if it is cancer? He has to reassure me a thousand times a day it is not.I have never been so consumed by fear until this happened to me.I keep saying "I have never been a bad person in my life-why is this happening to me"?!!!! Now,I am starting to ramble, sorry!! Also, let me add,the first day I met my dr. I told him I was convinced it must be "something deadly".He has since tried to reassure me it was and IS NOT...why can't i beleive the man???

Southern Diva,
You do not have cancer! Please stop driving yourself nuts!My fear was another surgery because mine was so painful. I kept thinking if I have another surgery and all that pain and then maybe incontinence...my mind was out of control so I know what you are going through. My world was all about blood and bms, just like you. You have to stop. I think it is either a fissure trying to heal or you are just trying to heal from all that surgery and it will take time.I think your nerves are worse than the actual problem right now. Please calm down and try to quit watching for blood. Keep up with the fiber and baths...you will be fine. Like I said it was from August to December for me and then even after every now and then in January. That is a hard place to heal because you use it so much. It will be okay! Let me know if I can help again! IT IS NOT CANCER...your doctor told you so! :nono:
