Hi,

I had been perusing the net trying to find info to help my husband. I found this site - looks like lots of good wisdom here!!

He has high trigylcerides - 436. A new doc just found this and prescribed 160mg Tricor - well side effects were way too bad and he just can't tolerate it. But his number is still high and we are looking into niacin. Does anyone have any experience with this? How did it go and any insights?

He has back problems (a failed surgery) which makes is impossible for him to excersize. He has gained weight since this happened to him.

since the high triglycerides have been found though, he has lost 10 pounds and we are walking every evening for 20-40 minutes. Also, he made a diet change - he has a sweet tooth, but has now changed that.

So, now we are planning fish oil and niacin along with weight loss to get the number down. What do you think about this idea?

I really appreciate any of your responses and hope I can help someone in the future!!

A good plan LIZY,
but the BEST results on triglyceride lowering seems to come from carbohydrate restriction (aren't these restrictions a DRAG?)
Anyway have him try a sugar free diet and keep the carbs on the fibrey end of the spectrum: legumes, whole grains and the like.
It's really tough to near impossible to lower carbs while eating low fat (I've tried) but often the effect of low carbbing on triglycerides is ASTOUNDING and almost overnight.
Give it a shot for a month and retest the TRI's.

Hi and Thanks Zip2Play!!!

Thanks for the encouragement, as I mentioned - he has problems with his back and he would like to get this under control, so it doesn't get worse and cause more problems - he has enough to deal with with his back.

I've beenn reading about the low carb (his doc recommended reading the South Beach Diet book) and we're gonna do it - low or no carb! It IS tough, especially because that is what he was used to.

I'll tell you, the Tricor was so bad - one night he woke up in the middle of the night with burning skin, back pain and nausea - that kept coming in waves. Then he started to have muscle pain and fatigue after halving the dose and only taking it for two days. We read up on side effects and the muscle damage part was just too much. Expensive too!

I just hope the next test is lower.

Thanks very much,
Lizy
