What do you do for a swollen throat feeling/ top of the throat/ back of the mouth? Sudafed Benadryl type products just make me feel worse as it is not stuffy or THAT kind of congestion...Mostly I have trouble finding a comfortable poition that allows sleep!!! IS this throat feeling a common allergy feeling?

Hello Debra,
The swelling of the throat is potentially very dangerous; due to the fact that it's cutting off your air passage. You should take a trip to the emergency room in this case. You want to ensure that anaphylactic shock is not taking place. Do you know what brought about this allergic reaction? Is it something different in your environment? Was it something different that you may have eaten? Have you been stung by any insects recently?

Its not that kind of a feeling. I dont feel my breathing is at all restricted. It's just really uncomfortable--

Have you been under stress or do you have some acid reflux? Both of these things can cause the feeling you are describing. If your breathing is not restricted, you can try one of the over the counter acid relieving drugs and see if that helps.

Hello again Debra,
Finding out what is triggering this type of reaction will be key in relieving you of the symptom. Did you start taking the medication to relieve the symptom or was the symptom a result of taking the medication? How long have you had this symptom and do certain foods or drink trigger the swollen feeling? Is the feeling worse at certain times (ex. bedtime, early morning after a night sleep, or during the day)? Is the symptom worse in certain environments (ex. at home, at work, in stores)?

I Have The Same Thing. My Air Way Is Not Blocked, But Swallowing Is Difficult At Times. My Doctors Believe It's Due To Anxiety & Stress. I Take Lexapro. To Me I Don't Think I Am That Stressed, But I Will Give The Meds A Try. I Had The Scope Down My Throat Last Week. I Now Take Nexium As Well For Acid Reflux. I Don't Feel Heartburn Or Discomfort Either.
When I Have The Swollen Throat Feeling, I Try To Stop And Think Whats Going On At That Time. Sometimes I May Be Rushing Or Trying To Take On To Much, But Come On I Have 3 Kids, Who Would'nt Have Some Sort Of Stress.(ha-ha!!)
The Upper Scope Showed Also I Have Celiac Disease.(allergic To Wheat/gluten). I Don't Think This Is Related Thou.

Hey Debra~ My name is Deb also, and I just posted a message asking if anyone has this constant throat clearing problem...then I came here, and read your thread, and what you described is almost exactly the same thing I experience also. It is very annoying. And I noticed that when I am trying to go to sleep at night, I have to find a comfortable position, and it seems almost impossible. I have wondered also, if it is some acid reflux thing, or something with the esophogas....? Does your feeling like that ever get worse after you eat meals? please let me know. Thank you.
Deb~
I was doing a search on swollen throat symptoms and came across you guys. I have similar symptoms....difficulty swallowing, no pain but my throat feels thick. I have some hoarseness as well...it is starting to concern me. did any of you find anything out that may appease me prior to going to the doctor? i hope it is just stress and not something more serious.
thanks for your comments.

I have the exact same thing and I know what you're talking about. Please let me know if you find out what it is related to and how to treat it. I don't feel sick otherwise, just my throat feels tight. I feel like I need to keep swallowing, like a piece of bread is stuck in my throat. I have tried drinking tea as well as drinking cold water and taking ibuprofin. Nothing really seems to work. Also, I am pretty sure I don't have acid as I have never had that problem. I don't have insurance (another member of society who is a professional-college degreed person- who works FT but does not have access to affordable health insurance) so I prefer to self-medicate or wait this thing out if I can. Please advise, thanks!
