Hi everyone,
Today I had my first HSG and I was soooo terrified about having it because I have heard some negative things about this test. I know it's different for everyone, but I just wanted to share my story so that others like me who try to research the test will get a positive story to read instead of mostly scary ones.
First I got to the radiology department and checked in. I got changed and a tech called my name and I was so nervous I had my mom come in with me. The doctor was in the exam room and she reassured me that the test isn't that bad. I asked her to compare it to the sonohysterogram or hysteroscopy because I have had both of those tests already and I thought they caused some cramping, but nothing so bad I couldn't take it. She said it was probably easier than a hysteroscopy. That made me relax a little bit because I didn't think the hysteroscopy was too bad. I layed on the table with an upside down bed pan under my bottom which the doc said tilts the pelvis at the perfect angle. Next she inserted the speculum like in a regular gyn exam. She threaded a tiny catheter with a tiny balloon on the tip of it through my cervix and inflated the balloon to hold the catheter in place. That caused a really tiny cramp for a second. She removed the speculum and the radiologist came in. The doc slowly injected the dye as the radiologist took the pictures and I could see it on the monitor as well. The dye caused very minor cramping. Really the cramping was nothing and I am pretty wimpy. The dye spilled out of both tubes and my uterus was clear. The radiologist asked me to turn to either side for more xrays and then the doc deflated the balloon, removed the catheter, and it was over! All in less than five minutes from the time the speculum was inserted. Before the procedure I took 800 mg ibuprofen which is like four advils (about one hour before). So that's my story. I got up off the table, went to the bathroom to clean up, and got dressed and drove home. I was a tiny bit crampy for a few minutes afterward. That's it! I know everyone is different. I just wanted to post a positive hsg story in case there's anyone out there who may be needing one soon and is as nervous as I was.
Thanks,
Stacy

Recently I've had HSG and everything was fine. I didn't experience any pain, when the procedure was done i had a feeling of fullness, that's it. I was scared of HSG too, it was even more comfortable than pap smear. I'm gonna have endometrial biopsy, they say that hurts alot. I'll see that next week.
