View Full Version : How Can I Ever Have Peace of Mind About This?

My struggles with my vision continue on a daily basis, and now I am wondering if I need therapy as it seems like I am suffering from a type of phobia. I have this fear of rapidly increasing myopia or nearsightedness.

I started wearing glasses in the 4th grade, and immediately, my nearsightedness progressed severely. I can remember by junior high, I was stressed by having to wear thick glasses, but when I got out of high school, I knew that I always had contacts and lasik as an option so there was no worry. Plus I was told that the progression would taper off as my eye stopped growing.
It did taper off, and I went a 10 year stretch with no changes in my prescription. Then I started having the night vision problems in 2002. I got my eyes checked, and my prescription changed. 14 months later, my prescription has changed again. I got new glasses in April. This week, Ive noticed that with my prescription sunglasses, the vision is definitely blurry now. In just 3 months, my vision has deteriorate to blurry which makes me wonder if my current prescription is already outdated. I feel just depressed with this fear that the stronger lens i get, the faster my vision will keep getting worse. I'm like -7 in one eye and -5 in the other. It is so bad that I can not comfortablyread anything even holding it up to my nose. I don't wanna go back to the doc and find out that my vision has gotten worse already, and I can't afford buying new glasses at this fast rate. I just don't know how I am ever going to get my peace of mind back.

Sorry for the long post, but I know you guys give great advice, and maybe someone can relate to this fear.

Stronger lens wouldn't cause you to get even more myopic. And, they help to stabilize your grade of vision....

I have absolutely nothing to say. Therapy maybe? Meditation? Something that calms the mind may help in this.

Hey Tx, you sure do have your share of eye problems. My vision has been changing rapidly too, but maybe in a different way than yours. I too have needed glasses for distance since early grammar school. I am now wearing progressive lenses as I was having a really tough time seeing close with my glasses on (although I can see fine close without them). When I got my last prescription in July '03 it as great, I could see close, far and inbetween with no problem. Within 3 months I noticed that my vision wasn't as clear and now it is a little over a year and I really need to make an appointment for new glasses but I've been trying to hold off as my insurance only pays for an exam every 2 years and the glasses themselves are so expensive, especially progressives. When I was at the eye doctor for an eye infection in the Spring he did a basic exam and discovered that my vision had changed and said I would probably need a lense change soon. He said that actually my distance vision is improving and the closeness is getting a little worse. If it is any consolation to you, he said it is very common for people to have spurts of vision changes for a few years and then things settle down. Hopefully you are just in one of those spurts and things will settle down for you. In the meantime, you may want to pick up a meditation tape or CD and give it a try - it just may relax you - if there is a Barnes & Noble or Borders Book Shop near you they both have a great selection. If things don't improve, maybe a few therepy sessions would help - just having someone to talk to can help tremendously. Good luck to you.
