Hello All... I am asking if ANYONE out there has been told they have a very low Iron count? If so, what were your symptoms???? Were you weak, pale, headache or a funny head sensation???? I would love to hear from anyone with any info on this. Did you have a special blood test to reveal this low count? Also , could a 50lb, weight loss, contribute to this low count somehow? Please feel free to write. Thank You all....Janatee

Hi Janatee, I am anemic as well. The doctor runs a blood test to get your levels. The docs ran other tests on me such as upper and lower scopes to see if I was losing blood due to ulcers or some type of internal bleeding. What they found was I have Celiac dieases(allergic to wheat). He stated this could be me problem. I feel extremly weak at times. Also my memory and concentration are a problem. Some times I kinda space out,I can hear but can't respond. With you losing sooo much weight, I feel maybe you became anemic due to nutrition. I'm not a doctor, so follow up w/your M.D.
Hope this helps! Petals

I have Pernicious anemia. I have low blood counts due to lack of ability to process B-12 and to absorb iron through the normal process of eating food. Anytime you restrict your diet enough to lose 50 lbs rapidly, such as over a 5month period of time or less, you are putting your iron stores at risk. If you have an iron losing problem it is worse.

Hi everyone! I am new to the boards and I am looking for advice on low iron count. I was just told my iron level is at 26. The norm is anywhere from 56-200+. I am getting set up with a hematologist asap because I have dropped from being at level 33 to 26 w/in 3 months. My symptoms are headaches/migraines, memory loss, concentration problems, unable to balance, lightheadness, shakes, weak, tired all the time even w/ naps in the middle of the day and along many other symptoms. I was really ill just recently where I felt the illness was almost crippling. The docs believe that was a virus on top of the iron definicency but it was enough to scare me!!! What should I expect when I go see this Hematologist? Is 26 is so low that I should be concerned? I am spooked but trying not to let it get to me. Thanks for all your help!

Im alot older than you (52 next month). When I was 29, i had a low iron count. I was told it was a 2. I was sick all the time. My dr at that time thought i had a bleeding ulcer. I went thru much testing and finally started taking prilosec for the ulcer. It was new at that time. I was still feeling ill, so i switched doctors. My new dr discovered i had a tumor in my pancreas and uterus.
Since my operation, i've become diabetic. I never did get to see the hemalogist. I feel fine now. I forgot to mention i was also put on iron theraphy.

I am sorry to hear it took so long for them to find the problem but I am glad to hear that you have found some relief. This is the first doctor since I was 17 that took my testing this far. I am 27 now and since then I have had a lot of hair loss w/ this too. I went from having thick hair to hair you can see straight through to the scalp. I never linked the two (iron/hair loss) until this year. I won't complain as much because I can only imagine how you felt at level 2 if I am feeling so bad at level 26!!! Thanks for the input! I have been told by family members that I am just lazy and a I am faking my illnesses so this website helps me to know that I am not going crazy!!!!

What is the difference from pernicious anemia and regular anemia? Do Low Red Blood counts mean you are anemic? Can taking high doses of cholestrol lowering medication make you have low Red Blood Count and Anemia? How do you cure Low Red blood count and anemia or pernicious anemia?
Thanks
