View Full Version : What's wrong with me?

Hey people. I've just had a lot on my mind thanks to some recent events.

I'm a 20 year-old male, 5'5", about 114 pounds. I also exercise regularly, and have done so for the past 1.5 years, and I incorporate a lot of cardio into my workout. In April, my doctor checked my cholesterol and it came back as:

TC 246
HDL 53
LDL 169
And I don't know the Triglycerides number, but I'm sure you guys can calculate it somehow.

My doctor told me it was a little high, and that I need to see a nutritionist on how I can better my diet. Now, my diet had always been quite good, but I decided to take her advice anyway. So, I've since stuck to a stricter diet. Originally, it was very strict, but I've managed to loosen up a little, including fatty foods only on occasion so as not to lose out on essential nutrients. (That and I'm closing in on underweight for my height. Also, my mother, a doctor herself, thinks the test is wrong, and that my numbers are actually much lower. I've also upped the cardio in my workouts, so as to better the HDL.)

What do you think about my numbers and what I should do? (Please note that there has not been a history of high cholesterol on either side of my family.)

Now, on to what's on my mind.

Throughout my life, I've fainted more than the average person, about 6 times total. I thought I had fainted my last a couple of years ago, and I went to see a doctor about it. Judging from the tests he did, he came to the conclusion that I fainted because I had hypoglycemia in the morning hours, since my faints occurred during the morning. He also determined this because I usually had only cold cereal for breakfast, and recommended that I be given eggs for breakfast on most days to remedy this problem. Well, for a period of time, I followed his recommendation, but after a few months, I simply began eating what I like for breakfast, and thought my problem was gone. (From what I know, I don't have cardiac syncope, as my doctor does not suspect it.)

A couple of days ago, I woke up quickly to go to the bathroom. There, while standing and urinating, I began to feel nauseated, dizzy, and weak, and had to stop urinating and soon found myself collapsing toward the floor. I was unconscious for a few minutes, but upon waking, I was hyperventilating, my pants were wet, and the back of my head was also wet. I stayed there for a few minutes, and only when I felt better, I got up and told my parents and they helped me out.

Has my problem returned or did I faint because I simply got up too quickly?

My mom thinks I need to eat much more, especially since I'm a growing teenage male, and not worry so much about what I eat. For some reason also, I find that when I eat non-fatty meals, I feel somewhat weak, but when I eat fatty meals, I feel energized and ready to go. Could there be a reason for this?

Sorry for all this information, but I've really needed a lot of advice. I plan on asking my doctor, but first I thought I'd get some input from you guys.

Thank you.

Hey Joe,

Firstly I think somebody messed up your test...your triglycerides are5...My nose tells me a mistake was made.

Your weight is low and close to TOO LOW in my estimation (BMI of 19.0.) Are you restricting food for any reason- you shouldn't be. Dizzy and fainting might be expected.

Why not go on a strength training program of some kind and build some muscle...it's EASY under the influence of 20 year old androgens.

A stab in the dark- you seem to be flirtiing with anorexia? Anything in that guess?

Hey zip,

Thanks for your reply. My triglycerides are 5??? Could you give me the formula for calculating this? I'm not sure you're correct here actually. My calculation was 120, which is normal.

As for the anorexia thing, no, I'm not anorexic and I'm not restricting food. I eat a lot, in my opinion, and I eat at least 4 meals a day. Perhaps I'm overexercising?

And I'm sorry that I don't understand, but what do you mean by 20 year-old androgens?

Thanks for all your help.

If I don't eat enough protein foods, or take in too much sugary stuff, my blood sugar goes all over the place.

I will get weak, dizzy, shaky, nauseated, etc. I used to feel the worst in the mornings too. Maybe you should start your day with something high protein... like egg substitutes or just egg whites. Eat tuna/salmon as well.

Personally, I think you're underweight. 5'5' 114 for a guy is too low. I'm 5'1", 117, and my weight is considered normal...but I'm 46 and female.

Regarding the feinting: Seems like once a person becomes prone to feinting, they stay proned to feinting. If eating more had eliminated your feinting, then you need to continue doing what made you feel better. Or else you need to eat frequent small meals throughout the day.

Its possible to eat more without driving up your cholesterol numbers.

good luck.

Hello, You really need to eat more complex carbs to curb the fainting, that is what is going to keep your insilin level since complex carbs burn slower. You're fainting, because your sugar is too low. Simple carbs will only spike your insulin, and result in a quick fix for the fainting. You do need to pop some simple carb though when you first start to feel faint, to get the sugar into your blood stream faser. You do need to see a nutitionist to get yourself back on the right track with eating, so you don't eat too much of one thing and not enough of the other. I don't think your doctor meant for you to only eat eggs for breakfast. He may have wanted you to add them to your breakfast. When you work out a lot, you need the carbs for energy and the water to keep from dehydrating.

120 is correct.

Fainting as you describe is NOT normal. I haven't a clue as to why you have this problem, but it's NOT your diet! Sure, your cholersterol isn't ideal and you will need to get that total and LDL lower, but FIRST>>>you need to find out the cause of these fainting episodes. If you're HYPOGLYCEMIC, then this may be a red flag for developing a diabetic condition down the road. Get a COMPLETE physical and perhaps a second opinion.

Sorry Joe,
I did that triglyceride calculation BEFORE my morning coffee and that's always DANGEROUS.
I started out right: 246 - 53 - 169 = 24 (so far so good) and then I stupidly DIVIDED by 5 (to erroneously get 5) instead of MULTIPLYING by 5 and getting 120 like all the well caffeinated people did! My BAD! :D
