I am going for MRI today and I am a little nervous...although I have had a MRI before, I am just nervous about actually doing and maybe getting some definative answers on what the problem is with me. Prayerfully nothing will be wrong and then it would have just been all in my head...although at this point I don't think that my skin feeling prickly, my balance is off, dropping things and all that...but you know what , maybe it is just in my head...I don't know, but after the MRI if there is nothing wrong, I need to chalk it up to stress and move on with my life, I have wonderful children, and a great husband that have been neglected because of this...

Thank you all for your support and caring thoughts and widsom.

Bec,
I hope that your test went well today. I know exactly how you are feeling. I had my MRI on Monday, and my doctor called today to see if he could come over and talk to me after work. I knew at that point that it wasn't going to be the best news. However, it didn't turn out to be the worst news either. They did see a patch on my brain - but only ONE :bouncing: ! Unfortunately, I now have to go in and have an MRI of my neck and spine, and I have to have a spinal tap. The last one scares me to death. My doctor assures me that they aren't that bad, but that's easy for him to say when he's never had one  At any rate, it would be nice if you could keep me posted on what you find out. It would be a little more comforting going through all this with people who can relate.

Thanks and good luck!!!!!!!!

Nelle

Well, they actually rescheduled my MRI to today...I had it at 7am this morning, of course nothing goes well, the injection site ruptured and my arm is swollen. The lady that did the test said that nothing jumped out at her on the MRI, but the radiologist will be looking at it of course. I am glad that I got it over with, but know I think that it is all just stress related. I guess that it has all been in my head and that kind of scares me the most. That maybe I can't handle stress anymore and that my body is fighting against me. But one way or another, I am getting on with my life.

Nellie, I am glad that you got semi good news...the spinal tap shouldn't be too bad for you or at least I hope not. I will be praying for you and your speedy recovery.

Dessell, I am in the same boat as you and hope that we get answers soon, I think that we fight so hard to find something wrong with us ... or at least for me so I don't think that I am totally lossing my mind.

Prayers for everyone...

Nellie 99: Don't worry about the spinal tap... it's not as horrible as it sounds, really! :) Just don't plan for anything that day, go home and go to sleep that way if you *do* happen to get a headache, you'll sleep through it! I had no side-effects, but I know some people get a headache.. Don't stress about it. It's no biggie!

Bec: How's the arm? That sounds nasty! I've never heard of that happening, but I try not to frequent medical centers as best as I can! LOL.. ;) Hope your MRI turns out fine and that the worst of your troubles is your arm!

Nellie, Heather is right about the spinal tap. Just relax. The docs are trained to perform this procedure very gently. I barely noticed and we chatted about shopping--of course--and other girly stuff while the CSF fluid filled up the tubes. It was smooth! Beware of the headache. I was winner in that category. Going home to sleep is excellent advice and remaining off your feet for 24 hours, if possible, to avoid the headache and opening up the teeny-tiny puncture wound. What causes the headache is the loss of fluid and also getting up. Drink all the fluids the doc recommends! Good luck. I know you'll do well! :D

Hi Bec,

Sorry you had problems with the IV! Hope your arm heals swiftly!

How is your vision? Did you inform the neurologist of the visual disturbances you've been experiencing. That is a key symptom to explore why you are having symptoms. If not MS, there are other autoimmune/systemic illnesses that can be the cause too. Have you had a lab work-up? Particularly, an ANA? TSH?

I have a major needle phobia. I can handle IVs for some reason, but shots and needles in a place other than the crook of my arm stresses me. I almost pass out getting novacaine at the dentist.

Do they numb the area before doing it, and how long does it take?

Thanks for the advice about the headaches. Do they give you anything in case you get one?

Another question I have is do you guys have a lot of pain with MS? My legs have been killing me - my left is worse than my right. I have a hard time going to bed at night because it hurts so bad (I'm sure the insomnia doesn't help), and I get "jumpy" muscle twitches and short stabbing pains in some spots. Also, do you guys ever see bright lines? I started with spots a month ago, but now it's been lines.

Sorry I have so many questions, but I just don't have anyone to talk to about this, and I don't know what symptoms I should be talking to my doctor about.

Nellie: the contrast for the MRI is given in the arm, but I just turned stupid and cannot, for the life of me, remember HOW its administered.. IV or shot.. hhmmm.. LOL. DUH! They didn't numb the area for me, I didn't ask. Just *another* shot.. :) And for the possible headache, take a tylenol and go to sleep.

The only pain I deal with is burning in my hand so I cant help with your leg pain question. Sorry! :)

HeatherJM,
What do mean, burning?

HeatherJM

Nellie, the burning I refer to is in my hand. It feels like I put my hand on a stove element. Like I scalded myself. The skin isn't hot, but it feels hot inside. Know what I mean? Think back to when you've burnt yourself... kinda like that, minus the skin tightness. :)

I get that in my feet. They get really hot inside, but when I feel them, they feel like the temperature of the rest of my body. It feels really strange, but it doesn't really hurt. Did they give you anything to relieve the feeling, or is that something they can't help you with?:-(

Hi Nellie, I'm on Neurontin to help with the burning, but mine hurts. It's not the kind of pain that is disabling, but more irritating. The Neurontin has worked wonders, compared to before, but it doesn't take it away 100%. Apparently the burning is one of the toughest symptoms to deal with. :(

Hi Nellie, I hope I'm not too late to give my input on your LP needle questions. I know that a LP sounds very invasive and scary! I too felt overwhelmed. I had eaten a scrambled egg sandwich made by my hubby before going. While on the table waiting for the doc, I began to feel very relaxed and calm. It was the tryptophan from the egg sandwich! A good ploy done by my genious husband!

I believe a local is given for the LP. Mine went so easy that I didn't even notice it being given. I was told my doc was very gentle, and she proved her reputation! :D

With regards to medications for the LP headache, talk to your doctor about how he/she handles prescribing meds for a possible LP headache. I got caught with the headache after hours (pharmacies and doctors were closed) so I had to wait until the next morning (suffering all night) until I could get the RX. I really didn't think I was going to get the headache. Next time, I'll remember to stay off my feet but also grab that prescription! :D

So good luck to you.
