I wasn't sure where to put this thread. My mom just found out she has bone spurs in her neck and she is in a lot of pain. The DR gave her motrin. I have read a bit about what exactly this is, but I was just wondering if anyone had input on treatments. Thanks

If the spurs are not hurting her much or the pain can be controlled by medications there is not much to do at this point, Motrin however will do nothing for her. If the spurs grow and because painful or cause compression on the spinal cord or nerves then surgery is done to remove the spurs.
Do you know where in her neck the spurs are? are they near the cervical spine or more near the throat? Has she had an MRI done at all or just x-rays?

If they are in her spine she should seek out a nuerologist or a nuero surgeon for appropriate medications and treatments. Physical therapy may help but it might also make it worse.

The doctors may offer steriod injections to reduce swelling but I strongly advise against it. There are many long term problems associated with the injections and furthermore the manufacturer of the medication used in these injections strongly advises against having them anywhere in your spine, including your neck. If you look at the back board and the pain management board you'll see a lot of controversy going on over these injections, most of it is not good.

Spurs can grow rapidly, if her pain increases or she looses and feeling she definately should be seen again. They can also grow slowly over time. Usually a spur is a result of an underlying problem and grow to actually protect whatever is injured, they can however cause more damage than good.
