Is it true that after getting pneumonia your more prone to getting it again? I've heard this from alot of people, since I had double pneumonia 4 years ago when I was 13. I also heard once you get it your never quite as healthy like you use to be. I was wondering if that was true also. I thought what doesnt kill you makes you stronger, so you would be less likely to get it again. Thank you

It seems to be that way. One way to prevent getting pneumonia again is to take care of your lungs. If you smoke, stop, if you drink alcohol, stop. Eat healthy, exercise, keep weight in normal range. Live a good positive life, take care of yourself.

My 5 yr. old was recently hospitalized w/double pneumonia. I had also been told that once you get it your susceptible to it so I asked the Dr. that released her from the hospital & he said that it isn't true. It does take what seems like forever to feel 100% again, but you aren't necessarily going to get it often. I had it when I was 2 & haven't had it since!

Thank you  I got sick a few yrs ago, no known cause, I was in a coma for 2 months, both lungs were filled, during that time I was on life support, not expected to live. Since then I have been back in the hospital with pneumonia just once, after that visit I had the pneumonia shot and have had no problems, not even the bronchitis that I had been getting every year. One thing that I do try to remember when I have the flu, or get sick, is to not spend most of that time lying down, I sit up as much as possible so the congestion cant settle in my chest and I try to get the flu shots every year.

not necessarily so - the lung will nearly always go back to normal and you should make a full recovery if healthy and fit

pneumonia in a child can lead to bronchiectasis later in life

lung diseases may predispose you to pneumonia
