Hi I just noticed my 6 month old DD has a purplish blue bottom lip. It's not bothering her at all, but she is kinds holding it out like in a pout. I really dont think she bumped it because I was holding her when it started turning. She was playing with the dog...could it be allergies? She is also teething, but I've never heard about lips turning colors while teething. I'm really stumped here. Any thoughts at all?
TIA

how long do you think it has been like that? there are vasular disorders that can cause that. Hemangioma is what comes to my mind. It's basicly a collection of blood vessels, it either goes away on it's own or is removed by surgery. I remember it because when TLC had it's plastic surgery show on a few years ago they did quite a few, and one of them was a little girl who had a purple lip (it wasn't an hemangioma it was another vascular disorder but i forget the name) . I would wait a few days to see if it subsides, if it doesn't then i would definitly ask the doctor about it. If you do a search for it you will get a better definition of it and possibly it will be able to help you to figure out if that could possibly be it or if it is just an injury...could she have hit herself in the mouth with a toy? or something in her crib?

Thanks for the quick reply. It just started about 30 mins ago. and I had been holding her for quite awhile so she could pat the dog (she loves him). And when she looked up at me I noticed it. I know it wasn't there before, bcause it's really noticeable. I will keep an eye on it Iguess. She has a Dr. appt on tuesday, I guess I can wait. It's just something I've never seen before on any baby....

My son had that happen when he was 13 months. My friend's son had it happen at 9 months. Both were diagnosed with heart murmurs (which are now healed on their own). What did you find out from the doctor?

Well I went to the Dr. yesterday and she said it's most likely just from her biting on it because she is teething, though she has never seen a baby bite their lip till it turned blue. She couldn't find any other reason for it. She told me just to watch if it gets worse if she has been really active( indication on a heart problem), other wise it should just go away on its own. She didn't seem overly concerned, and my Dr. usually is even if it turns out to be nothing, so I feel better now.

That's great that she was able to ease your concerns. I hope that it was just the teething. As long as your doctor listened to your baby's heart, a murmur significant enough to cause the lips to turn blue would be terribly obvious and she would have known. Of course, I'm sure there are other heart related things to, but it sounds as if you have a doc in whom you can put your confidence. I don't trust Aidan's doctor's after everything they've put us through with misdiagnoses.
