I initially had a new floater that was pretty noticeable in my left
eye. I went to my general eye doctor and he said the retina looked ok,
but when taking a more detailed look he said there was something
suspicious. I was referred to a retinal specialist and he said my left
eye was fine, but checked my right eye and said there was a small hole
and he repaired it within minutes and I was out of the office. It was
quite an easy, non-invasive procedure. The nurse of the retinal
specialist dilated my eye about 10 minutes before the doctor examined
my eyes and performed the procedure. I know that when the eyes are
dilated your vision becomes blurred, but my vision did not seem that
blurry at the time my eyes were checked by the doctor. Would the
doctor have done the retinal exam and subsequent laser treatmemt if my
eyes were not dilated enough? How would I have an effective analysis
of my eyes if the eyes were not dilated enough? This doctor has an
fine reputation.

I have had my eyes dilated several times in the last few months, and my vision is not blurry when they are dilated. The light bothers me tremendously of course because the pupils are wide open, and I usually have to wear sunglasses even indoors for a few hours. The doctor probably wouldn't have done the tests if your eyes weren't dilated enough, because they can't see in there if your pupil is small. My eyes dilate really quickly. I have a macular hole in one eye, and that is a hole in the central part of the retina. It cannot be fixed with laser treatment, requires major surgery, and a six week recovery period, two of those with my face down parallel with the floor. So you were fortunate to have yours fixed immediately.

Just wondering what your symptoms of an "unusual floater" were? I have one that I see only when I blink, just about everytime I blink, except when looking at a really dark surface. Just went to dr yesterday, he said it was most likely a floater. And you said he said initially when he looked at the retina it looked ok, but then he took a more detailed look. What did he do to take a more detailed look? I've been to the specialist when they dilate your eye and press on the eye to look at the retina. Is this what he did?

It is funny because the eye that initially had the floater which has since gone away over the last couple of weeks was actually fine when the retinal specialist looked at it. I did get my eyes pressed on(very uncomfortable) and it was looked at with a slit lamp I assume, a very bright yellow light. It turned out that the right eye(which I have some small floaters in) had a small hole but I never noticed any symtpoms with it other than the little floaters I have had for years. The hole was way in the peripheral part of the eye. In for a check-up in 2 weeks.
