View Full Version : Question about size of follicles prior to retrieval

Hi Everyone,

I am 37 and my DH is 40 and we have never been pregnant.

I have had 3 prior surgeries for Ovarian Cysts and had my left tube removed because it was damaged.

I am currently on stimulation day 9 prior to my first IVF attempt. I had my second U/S with blood work this morning. I'm on 150 IU Repronex with 0.1cc of Lupron in the a.m. and and 150 IU of Gonal - F in the p.m.

I am feeling very bloated and tired which the RE says is expected which you all know is no fun but I am trying to stay positive and keep telling myself that it will be well worth the wait if I get pregnant.

I would like more information on the optimal size for follicles before retrieval. I have 5 on the right side which measured anywhere from 10 x 12 to 18 x 9, and 4 on the left from 9 x 9 to 16 x 5. My RE said that I should come back on Monday for another U/S with the hopes that the smaller ones will catch up with the larger ones. Has anyone had the wide range of sizes like this? Is this normal? Should I be worried about the larger ones getting even larger by Monday? This is my first post on the board and have read many encouraging posts, so thank you very much for all the infomation. I'm starting to get very nervous and would like some advice from anyone who can give it.

Many thanks,
Deb

well I am not sure about IVF if its the same as super ovulation, but i know that my doc wanted them around 20mm in size. Good luck to you and I hope it works out!

Dear Deb -
I'm hoping, too ... i've had 2 cycles of IUI so far. My doc says the cutoff is 17mm. I suppose it varies with different docs. Last cycle i had one over 17 and several under 17 - unfortunately the one over 17 was the only one that was released and available for the insemination. So, i've had to rest 1 cycle waiting for those annoying small ones to get out of the way. Your doc is closely monitoring the sizes of all of them and changing your meds accordingly. I wouldn't worry about the big ones getting bigger - if there's a concern, he'll cut back on your meds. Good luck!!

p.s. Take it easy while on the meds - i've had nasty side effects, too - headaches, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness and insomnia all at the same time ... i've found that going for long walks instead of vigorous exercise helps a lot. Do what you need to do to feel human, but don't overdo. Also, tell your doc about any bothersome symptoms and maybe he has some good advice.

Hey Deb,

Wow, I'm sorry you are not feeling all the great! I've been reading up alot about IVF and I get so scared when I read everyone's story. I hope things get better for you and you end up with a healthy baby.

All the best to you!
