View Full Version : Moisturizing after tanning?

I know that when you self-tan you should moisturize often because it helps extend your tan. But it seems like when I moisturize, my tan fades faster! So I started thinking and I've come to believe that the moisturizers that I'm using must have some ingredient in them thats maybe exfoliating my skin a little bit, like an alpha hydroxy acid or something. I don't know what actual ingredients are causing this problem so I don't know what to keep an eye out for when looking for a better moisturizer. Anyone know of any good moisturizers that are gentle and won't interfere with my sunless tan and actually help prolong it? Thanks!

HI.

After I tan, I always take a shower. Then, I rub a light mixture of baby oil and water on my skin. This does not have any harsh chemcials, so it should be ok.

It may clog your pores if your skin is sensitive.

For me, it works great.

Wait, are you talking about tanning in a bed or self-tanning? I self-tan, so I can't shower right after cuz it would rinse the tanning stuff off. Baby oil might work, but I think I'd prefer something less, well, oily lol

OOPS,
Yes, I was talking about a tanning bed.

But maybe the baby oil/water will work for self tanners.

I use Total Immersion by California Tan- that is what its made for - after tanning.

No, no, no - don't use baby oil on a self-tan. We use baby oil to REMOVE a self-tan. It's mineral oil. And a lot of lotions contain mineral oil. Also, any lotions that have AHA in them or are hair-growth inhibitors will mess up your ST. Curel is one that is known to cause problems, too.

Some that I know will work - most of the Suave lotions, Queen Helene, and my favorite, Aveeno creamy moisturizing oil (which is actually a lotion).

Your shower gel/soap can also affect your tan - bar soaps are notorious for removing tans. A simple shower gel is best. Although people often have problems with Dove shower gel.

Hmm, thats interesting. I didn't know baby oil would remove a self-tan, because I've heard from a lot of people that they apply baby oil before self-tanning so it goes on smoother. Wouldn't that ruin the tan by putting it on a base of baby oil then?! Just a thought.

Ok, so out with the baby oil. I throughly looked through the ingredients on the lotions I was using. One has grape seed extract and apple extract.....are all fruit extracts natural exfoliants? I thought I heard somewhere that fruits all have natural acids in them. Maybe thats whats wrong with that lotion.

I think I'll try the Aveeno creamy moisturizing oil...I like Aveeno products. I'm also interetsed in the Total Immersion lotion too though. I wonder which would work better.....

Yes, baby oil before a self-tan will cause the color to be lighter or not develop at all. Are you sure they meant before self-tanning?

Yeah I've read on lots of places people using baby oil before self-tanning so the tanner will go on smoother and apparently it helps prevent streaking. I've never tried it personally though. I always apply my tanner on freshly cleansed and exfoliated (but completely dry of course) skin.

I have never heard of that & I've seen self-tanning for years - plus I moderate a sunless site. We always tell people to use baby oil to remove their tan. Some people can't even use a lotion that contains mineral oil at all because it ruins their tan - others have no problem. Some people do apply lotion before the tanner - and some even mix the tanner with the lotion.

I also know from experience that baby oil/mineral oil can ruin a tan. I used a spray on lotion that had mineral oil as one of the main ingredients and the next day my tan looked awful. And I also use baby oil, along with Irish Spring soap, to remove a my tan if it is starting to look bad or I just want to start from scratch.

So have I and I coat my hands w. Baby Oil then rub my legs before I apply the self tanner- works wonderfully and I have never had a problem of it not developing.

As I said, some people do not have a problem with mineral oil - but a lot do. I just found it interesting that on a site that deals with sunless tanning, not once have I ever heard (and we have hundreds of members) of anyone using baby oil prior to tanning. I'm not saying people don't - just that I wonder why no one has ever mentioned it.

When I bought a self tanner from the Estee' Lauder counter, the sales lady told me to shower, shave legs, exfoliate, dry off then put moisturizer on before you put the self tanner on. Works great for me.
