I just heard about this today and am blown away that it isn't better known. It is sold through health food/vitamin outlets, so it isn't a big moneymaker for any drug company. It is a sugarcane/beeswax derivative that is claimed to be as effective as statins.
Surely someone here knows something about it and can tell me whether the info here http://substance.altmedangel.com/statnalt.htm is true and reliable. Can't wait to hear if anyone else here is familiar with it and has a good reason NOT to try it.

There's a reason why it isn't better known..it doesn't work ;) . I tried it and used the highest quality stuff I could find....NO effect whatsoever on my cholesterol. In fact, when I took it with a statin my cholesterol went UP  . Just my 2 cents>>>> it's a scam.

Thanks for the info on your experience. It appears that nothing works for everyone. I think I'm going to give it a try. Will let you all know how it goes.
Anyone else out there with experience?

Sounds good to me. May I make a request? Please test your cholesterol BEFORE you start and then AFTER using ONLY policosanol and NO OTHER supplements ;) . The problem with all the anecdotal *results* out there is that there is absolutely NO control or testing when evaluating this stuff.

Too late for that. I have started on the South Beach Diet as well as starting Policosinol. I am most concerned about getting my cholesterol down. It would be nice to know which one of these strategies is working (if either works!!), but I'll take the lower cholesterol either way!
Whatever, if the cholesterol goes down it will have gone down with 'natural' means, instead of expensive, hyped medications! That is my goal. If I can't do it, I'm willing to rethink medications. Niacin will be my next avenue of attack!

I've just recently been reading about it myself. I am very interested in your trial, and am going to give it a try myself. I hope it works for you, and I hope you'll keep us posted!!

I am now almost a month into this regimen. I have switched doctors as I found the one I was using too medications-oriented. She didn't seem willing to even THINK about alternatives.
I will try to get my cholesterol tested again in a month or so. I supposedly takes 4-6 weeks for the policosanol to have an effect and I want to be sure it has had a good chance to do it's magic! I am having some medical tests unrelated to cholesterol this week and must stop all meds for a few days, so will be interrupting the poli for a few days. Hope that doesn't effect over-all outcomes, but time will tell.
Oh, and I started at 5 mgs for a few days to check for side effects then increased the dose to 10 as recommended.

If you are on both the diet and policosanol and do get a positive result, you would have no way of knowing if it was the diet or policosanol. I twill make moot any ability to assess the value of either of the two for the intended desired outcome. You will be obligated to continue both forever never knowing which has had the influence on the numbers. Seems a less than ideal way to go about determining the effectiveness of one or the other.

I agree, Music, but unfortunately I refuse to treat myself as a lab animal. I can't afford to let the cholesterol remain high for TOO long. I started fooling around with meds last fall and it's been almost a year, so I'm anxious to 'fix' the problem. I can live taking the policosanol AND cutting back on carbs for the rest of my life quite comfortably, I think. I suppose at some point when my weight gets down to more reasonable levels, IF the cholesterol is under control, I might stop the poli to see if it makes a difference. THAT would tell me which one was working too.
My main concern was to get the cholesterol under control and if coupling strategies produces the desired effects, I really don't care WHICH one is working.

I would suggest that if your #s are lower, discontinue the policosanol and retest in a month. I would bet that the diet would be the reason for any drop. I have yet to find someone with positive results attributed to policosanol alone. In any event, as the previous poster pointed out, you don't want to take something if you don't need to :D .
