My partner gets tiny little blisters on her tongue. She claims they are very painful. They are herpes type I. It is contagious to others. She took valtrex and ever since the first treatment for a period of 1 week she has not had another blister on her tongue. So far clear for 6 months without anymore medication.

I get cold sores like you but they aren't painful, it's just embarrassing in public.
