I'm hoping I can get a quick response on this one! Late this afternoon Andrew (age 8, w/ secondary AI) flipped off of his bike and got a nasty gash on his forehead (about 1 inch long) requiring stitches. At the dr's office he said he felt fine, but he is now complaining of a headache (big surprise) and slight nausea. The endo. says to stress dose him only when he has a fever or vomiting, but from what I've read here, many of you feel better with a stress dose during lesser illnesses. Would you do stress dosing in this case?? Thanks for your help!

Dear Jill,
Just one more thing to think about/worry about. Did they x-ray for concusion? Don't want to needlessly concern you, but the headache and nausea are both indicators he could have a concusion. I would probabaly call the ER and ask some advice as to what to do if a concusion is possible. I know there's ONE thing to do, which is to test their pupils. Both pupils should respond if he is put in a dark room for a couple of minutes and you shine a small flashlight into his face. Both pupils should get smaller, quickly and at the same rate. But then there are the other signs, too, the nausea, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, probably headache (though it could easily occur for obvious other reasons). I sure hope you see this tonight before his bedtime, as they say you don't want to put a person down to bed with a concusion. If you suspect one, sometimes they have you awaken the child every so often (2 - 4 hours, I think) to see if they are still conscious. You ask them easy questions, to see if they are coherent, as well (What's your name? What's my name? What town do we live in? What's our dog's name?...). Hope he feels a lot better tomorrow, poor little guy. ~ Tracy
