can somebody tell me what the big deal is? I dont want to sound stupid, but from a male point of view ( i realise females have a chance of cancer with it) what is the big deal about hpv? I see people getting so upset about it. The worst case scenario is some warts appear on your penis, you take medicine/freeze them, whatever , and they go away. Yea, so you will have the virus forever, but there are no other symptoms of it? Or am i missing something? This is a serious question, I'm not trying to start a fight here, but i just found out I have it and this is what I am trying to figure out. thanks

for some it's just a hard thing to accept. it's scary to think you have a virus in you that you will never be rid of, and you will always have to tell your partners about it so that they can decide if they want to be sexually active with you or not, and a lot of the time it leads to rejection. i think it's more of an emotional thing than physical. i know a few people who've only been with 1 or 2 people and have contracted it...though they have not been premiscuous or anything like that, they still feel dirty and wonder "why me?" all the time.
for me it sucks because when i get them, i get lots of them...they seem to come in packs on me. i just had my first laser removal on monday, and i've had some minor pain and bleeding as a result. i really REALLY hope i don't have to have this surgery on a regular basis for the rest of my life. surgery, meds, etc gets to be pretty expensive.
that's just my 2 cents on the matter. like i said, i think it's more of an emotional feeling and how it makes you feel about yourself and what others think of you (though you may not be premiscuous, others may tend to judge you as "dirty"), than it is a physical thing (though they can get to be pretty uncomfortable).

yea i guess so. But could you tell me how many times have you had them appear? I just got it about a month ago, im using some medicine the doc gave me, but from what i read i seems like they may appear just once and thats it never come back. The only thing i see that would be a problem are the bumps, which really are just cosmetic more then anything not painfull or uncomfortable.

well, mine appeared for the first time about 2 months ago. within about 3 weeks it went from 1 or 2 to about 5 or 6. when i went to the bathroom, i could see a little blood on the toilet paper and it hurt a little. i had the surgery monday and i've been told that getting rid of the warts and lasering any areas that warts may eventually appear in (she applied acid to areas in my genitals and any area that turned up white was infected) should reduce my chances of getting anymore. however, i've been told that there is always a possibility that any time in the future (1 month to 100 years) more warts could appear. anyone with hpv always has a chance of getting more warts.

mine didn't look anything like pimples...they looked more like skin tags, only thicker. they were pretty big. do a search on google for "genital warts" and you can find plenty of pictures.

HPV has been known to lead to cancer. HPV can be painful, not in all cases, but could be. What woman do you know will look at a penis full of warts and have sex with them...condom or no condom? HPV is a very big deal, and can cause very serious medical conditions, and weakens your immune system and could lead to other std's.

i was under the impression that hpv only leads to cancer in females (cervix cancer). Its not painfull at all to me, but i could see that being a problem obviously if it was. Penis full of warts can be removed. (not the penis the warts) Weakens your immune system? Thats the first i heard of that, do you have any links you can share that say that? Not questioning you, i just want to know for my own good. thanks

hpv doesn't just cause cancer in women...
"There are high-risk and low-risk types of HPV. High-risk HPV may cause abnormal Pap smear results, and could lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. Low-risk HPV also may cause abnormal Pap results or genital warts." - source: http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/stdhpv.htm

John, it is different for women. There is a type of hpv that males carry but have no symptoms (but could cause penile cancer later in life 2% chance *I think*) This strand causes abnormal cells to grow on the cervix and if it is not taken care of it can lead to cervical cancer. I had to go through a cone biopsy where they went in and cut out half of my cervix to get rid of the abnormal cells. This is something completly different from having a wart on the genital area. (not that isn't as bad) but there is no just taking medicine and it never comes back. These abnormal growths have to be watched for the rest of a woman's life. I've only been with one person and in a year we are getting married. What a suprise I got when I found out that I had hpv and I was so embarrassed. I thought that everyone would find out and I thought that I was dirty and most of all I felt guilty like I brought this on myself. I hope you can understand that it is a very emotional thing for a woman and even for some men. It's just something that those of us affected with hpv have to deal with.

I really have had it all!..... About 2 years ago i contracted HPV, since then i have exhausted all creams and lotions, i refuse to have oral sex and since, i have never had open sex in a well lit room, only in the dark, they seem to go for a while, but then just appear again, nothing ever seems to work, they get so sore sometimes, erections are just painful, and if a girl comes onto ya? what can you say? 'oh sorry my erection hurts as my tight skin is splitting'
Trust me guys, it changed my life, i have absolutely no confidence now, even though they're pretty fickle, i was a right jack-the-lad too.!!
So you your ansa? You are looking for a fight, because they can change you, depending how often you have sex, but i WAS regular,
one thing tho, i've learnt my lesson

you guys are lucky, I got HSV 1 & 2 , HPV , HIV 1 all on my first time exposure. It was a s imple low risk, receved oral sex and vaginal protected sex.
I feel hell of diry, infact, with HSV and HPV you can LIVE, not with HIV.
I am only 20 and my life is a living hell.

This is a serious question, I'm not trying to start a fight here, but i just found out I have it and this is what I am trying to figure out. thanksThe sad truth is, for guys many STDs don't carry the consequences that they do for women. Cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted disease (HPV-related) for something like 90% of all women. If left undiagnosed and untreated, cervical cancer is one of the most painful ways to die. For some women, exposure to HPV leads to years of accelerated pap smears, repeated cervical surgeries (such as cone biopsies or LEEP) which can impact their ability to have children. Some get so fed up or develop such abnormalities that they end up having a hysterectomy.
HPV can also be contracted by a baby during the birth process if there's an active infection at that precise time.
None of these situations are minor inconveniences to the women and their families.
HPV may never present the health risks to you that it does to women. That doesn't relieve you of the responsibility of informing your sexual partners that you have it.
Oh, and if you ever develop an immune system disease, you'll find out HPV can be very opportunistic and cause you all kinds of problems.
Good luck ;)

I have HPV or HAD rather when i was 18, i am 24 now. The Doctor told me on or two things could happen, i would either get couliflower like warts after a while or flat bumpy warts whcih lead to CervicaL Cancer in most women or the virus may never fully progress leaving me healthy. In Women, they ask that you get papsmears every 6 months to see the if any ubnormalities are present. THE BIG DEAL IS CANCER IN WOMEN which can leave you unable to have children, which can lead to ovarian cancer and other things....
Regarding the CONCERN ABOUT HPV, Someone mentioned that it is having to tell your partners "I HAVE HPV", that is not the case at all, after 2 Normal Papsmears, my Doctor told me i never had to tell anyone because it was gone. And it has never been detected. I am married now and have unprotected sex with my husband. He gets his normal checkups with me and he doesnt have it. Not to say that its okay to have or have had HPV But i have had 3 GYN's since i was 10, everyone one who i asked about HPV told me it is very common and CAN go away as long as you do not have contact with someone who has open warts as it could trigger the sleeping virus. For some people it stays in the body, for me and a few others who have it, it dissapeared.
The BIG DEAL Is that IT IS AN STD, regardless of what you may have, Crabs, Scabbies, Chlamedyia or even Ghonorrea, it doesnt matter if they can be cured, its that fact that you know you HAVE IT OR HAVE HAD IT, THATS THE BIG DEAL. I hope that answers your questions.....
