View Full Version : Anyone know of a GOOD Foundation?

Hello. Has anyone ever heard of a foundation that WORKS? I've used some from Mary Kay, and also some from Olay, but nothing seems to work! Should I try the expensive stuff? Does it work better, or does it depend on the skin type? Mine is kind of a mixture. It's not dry, but it does get oily. Could it be getting oily because of the make-up?

I have used MK in the past and actually found that Age Defying Formula from Revlon works better. Its not the cheapest stuff- about the same price range as MK- but works great and I don't have to deal with a consultant! :D

lancome's color ID foundation is the best...and they have a daylight lamp to see which foundations actually blend right into your skin color. awesome match

I like Revlon Colorstay Natural. It comes in oil-free and has spf 15. It also stays on pretty well without making you feel like you are wearing a mask.

I have wrinkles and freckles, which is a real challenge. Plus I wear contacts and the fragrance in a lot of cosmetics tends to irritate my eyes.

I have had good luck with Revlon Age Defying Foundation. And I buy it at the grocery store.

What are your needs? Do you jog, swim, is your skin still youthful?

It does depend on the quality of stuff you are using. The cheaper kind doesn't seem to consider the skins undertones and often you can't try it before you buy it. Go to a department store where A sales clerk can figure you skin tones and what type of product will look for best based on your skin tones and wheather it is oily dry or combo. Plus she wll put many colors on your skin so you can find the right shade. Walk around all day and see how the makeup holds up on your skin. If after having it on for several hours while walking around the mall and you come backto the counter and the makeup is still holding up, it sounds like the make up for you. Plus have you friends come to the mall to see it to. They can be a good judge if it truly does look good or if the girl behind the counter is trying to just make a sale. Once you find a make up artist you trust, you can go back over and over. She can put you on her mailing lists and you will know what specials they are running plus which products they have on sale. I do this but I am not totally brand loyal. I like blush from Chanel, lip sticks/glosses from chanel, base from Boby Brown, mascara from Lancome, and powders from either Lancome or Bobby Brown too. Bobby Brown has the best powderbase packs.

You will find your favorites too. Even it you don't have enough money, start collecting items one by one and you can stock up when they have freebies. Once you start wearing the nicer products, you will not be able to go back to cover girl and maybelline. I find cheaper lip sticks have too much wax and not enough color pigment. I can spot someone whearing cheap lipstick from a mile a way. Looks cheap. Hooker comes to mind. Start with good concealer and a good base. In time, get the better powders, I like pressed powders, but loose are okay. Get a great lipstick and eventually find the best lip liner when you have a few extra bucks. Upgrade you glosses last. I always use a different gloss shade over my lipstick color to give it a only color in the world as two had to be combined to make this one look. Don't forget a great mascara. In my book, no one beat Lancome mascaras. Mary Kay has great mascaras and are quite a bit cheaper than lancome. If I find a sale on Mary Kay mascara, I will buy every tube I can and put some back for later.

I play volleyball and basketball, and I'm 13 so my skin is still youthful :p And I just really want to have something to wear everyday.

I can spot a product snob a mile away. Nose stuck up in the air. B!tch comes to mind.

How dare you imply that women who wear "cheaper" lipsticks look like hookers. Not only is it rude, it's presumptious and mean. With all the makeup you listed as buying and wearing, some could assume that the amount you spackle on looks like a hooker too. Regardless of what brand you buy, trashy looks trashy. There are some women who over do it and look like a hooker regardless of whether or not they spend $40 or $4 on a lipstick. And honestly, who but 70 year old ladies uses lipliner? If your lipstick is such great quality, it shouldn't bleed outside of your lipline. Unless you've got wrinkles.

I love expensive products, but expensive doesn't always equal quality. My covergirl lipstick, which is just a few shades darker than my lips, looks nice all the time, but especially for when I'm running to class. It does not look cheap, nor do I look like a hooker. I look nice and natural with my Lancome mascara, Maybelline blush, and covergirl lipstick. If people started complimenting me on my makeup, I'd know I was wearing too much.

Perhaps you should reconsider before shooting off your mouth again. Regardless of how great and expensive your lipstick is, what difference does it make if it's on an ugly mouth who resorts to third grade name calling?

well said desertgirl.......honestly, I'm a makeup junkie. I have equally as much high end makeup as I do drugstore makeup. My favorite foundation is a drugstore brand, as is my favorite mascara! I had a roommate in college a few years ago who only bought Lancome makeup. And let me tell you, the $100 worth of makeup that she put on her face everyday looked like it cost about $1.00! Its about the color and the application; not the price or brand. Everyone has their own preferences and thats fine. But, the cheap makeup = hooker connection is downright ignorant. I don't care how much you pay for a product, if its not the right color for you, and/or you don't apply it correctly, it's not going to look natural. 99 bucks to 99 cents - it doesn't matter. Not everyone out there has the resources to purchase only high end cosmetics (me!) but I'm confident that the cosmetics that I do use and that are within my reach look nice and natural on me. What this comes down to is a matter of respect. Respect for each persons individual preferences and that $$$ (or lack of) makes no one better or worse than anyone else.

I like bare mineral makeup and I just started using Cory Cosmetics mineral makeup which really has the best coverage. You can buy samples for $.35. This way you can try them to see whether you like them or not.

revlon colorstay makeup is probably the dryest, cakiest makeup ive ever worn!

anyways to answer the initial question, there are alot of thing that go into finding a foundation right for you.
do you have alot to cover?or are you just looking for a glow? or maybe to even out redness ?
dont think that just because soemthing is expensive that its better...
so, depending on your skin type, thats where you should start. if your prone to acne, then make sure the foundation is oil free and non comedegenic..if you never get pimples, dont worry about it
next, always sample foundation at the store..dont go by what the bottle looks like...makeup should blend into your skin and become invisable..

anyways, point being..soemone may say on here "oh, this foundationis great!".but that doesnt mean itll be perfect for you. hense my comment on the revlon colorstay..

I had always had problems with oily skin and hated foundation. The lady who did my facials turned me onto Jane Iredale products. They are mineral powders that work as a foundation and have great coverage, but most importantly, last almost all day without any touch-up. My skin is the clearest it has ever been, I never have breakouts anymore. I think this product was created to help cover laser treatments and chemical peals while at the same time helping to calm the skin. You can find several online stores by searching for Jane Iredale. Good Luck!

alright, heres one

what would you recommend for someone who needs to cover active acne, acne scars, and is on accutane? accutane makes you more sensitive to the sun, so i guess soemthing with SPF in it would be good...and soemthing oil free. ..
hmm..also. i have alot of yellow in my skin and im pretty pale. It seems every foundation i buy is too pink or orange , and the odd one id\s just too white..then i have white face, yellow neck
help!

I still have to go with the Bare escentuals mineral makeup (Bare Minerals)
I have scarring, very pale-yellow based skin with freckles, etc. I am also very sensitive. I love this -it makes my skin look perfect. I use fairly light 1.2. It has spf 15 in it. This stuff is truly great!

I used Mary Kay for years. Liked it pretty well, but got fed up with being constantly pressure to sell it. so I went to Merle Norman. Not too bad either, except it is so heavy in weight. They have good lipsticks and eye shadows. So then my husband said why not try Estee Lauder. So I made an appointment at The Bon and that was about two years ago. it is expensive, but it lasts for six months. I figured it out and I was spending just as much on Mary Kay. (Husband says I work hard and I'm worth it) The Daywear Plus moisturizer for dry skin is excellent. At 54 I look 10 to 15 years younger. I love it. At least you get to try it before you buy it. You don't with any of the drugstore brands, like Revlon, CoverGirl, etc. And the mall is open much later than Merle Norman and I don't have to call my consultant when I want something. If you just feel you can't afford Estee Lauder, try Clinique, which is actually owned by Estee Lauder, they are real good, too. Any of the skin care programs out there at the malls are good. You just have to pick the one that's right for you.

I'm a believer, love Bare Essentials, it took me 2yrs to get up the nerve to buy it,I thought how can minerals/powder cover as good as my liquid, well I love it plus I have T- Zone and by the end of the day I can rub my forehead and it's not all greasy.Hope this helps a little.Tami

I'm working up the nerve to try out mineral makeup soon. I have a lot of acne scarring from the past year - my face just went nuts. I can't believe I ever thought it was bad before, because compared to this, wow. I was lucky before. Plus I swear now that I'm in my 20s, my skin isn't shedding as fast or something. Every breakout I have leaves a dark red mark and it seems to last forever now. It's so depressing.

My liquid foundations that I used to love just aren't cutting anymore. When I finally get some decent coverage that I'm happy with, I'm not even that happy because I look like I'm wearing a ton of makeup - cuz I am! Foundation, two concealers and a foundation-powder later. Yuck.

My question is, how long does it take to apply mineral makeup...honestly? Because everytime I look it up it seems soo complicated. I'm a 10-minute-makeup kind of girl!! And do I need to just wing it and order a bunch of sample colours to figure out my colour? I use C3 in MAC Studiofix if that's any help.

It takes me less time than putting on liquid make up, you just swirl, tap, and apply.I apply the Bisque (cover up) on my zits and under eyes first than apply the foundation,I don't have lines to blend either.I bought a sample little kit off of e-bay to see how I liked it, then I ordered the bigger ones, plus a brush which is awesome.

I worked for Estee Lauder and was able to try other dept store brand foundations, powders, etc. The same for drugstore foundations. Some worked well some did do wonders for me. I will say this....Bare Minerals has been the #1 makeup of all times for me. I have freckles and big pores and this really covered it all up without looking cakey. I honestly didn't think this stuff would cover anything when I saw it but it does. It is a bit pricer than other products but I am hooked. You don't even need very much to put on so it lasts longer. I really would recommend everyone to try it. However if your skin is more of a darker tone then it is hard to match colors. My gf is a dark complected Middle Easterner and she had a difficult time finding her color. I have light to med yellow undertones so I had to mix two of the colors to get my color.

I wanted the mineral makeup to work for me VERY badly!! I loved the way that it felt and how you didn't have to worry about it coming off on clothes and that it was good for acne. But I used it for months, different brands, different ways, no matter how light or heavy I put it on, it ALWAYS looked cakey. I want my makeup to BLEND! I don't want it to look like I am wearing makeup. So unfortunately I went back to the liquid. I use Revlon Colorstay also, in the glass bottle with the pump (it seems like there may be 2 different kinds and I haven't heard much good about the other one). It does not break me out and looks VERY natural but it does rub off on clothes. I use Jojoba oil underneath as a moisturizer and mineral veil on top and it looks fresh and natural and even a little dewey. I just wish it didn't ever rub off on my clothes!! The only time I really notice that though is if my boyfriend has on white when I go to hug him. Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I use a makeup sponge to apply, I heard it is better that way especially for people with big pores because the heat off of your fingers opens them up more. :)

Recently, on a whim, I changed my foundation to Revlon Colorstay Stay Natural Makeup (oil-free, SPF 15). I am LOVING it. Immediately after applying jojoba oil, I blend the foundation into my skin with my fingers. I then use a damp sponge to blend even more. I usually finish off with a dusting of loose powder (I use Almay Luxury Finish) and one last blending with the sponge. You can't even tell I'm wearing makeup. That was the main thing that deterred me from wearing foundation for so many years--the "made-up" look. But it is absolutely not a problem with this foundation. All foundations tend to look dry around my nose and in between my eyebrows, so I combat this by using the jojoba oil underneath.

Jojoba oil??? It is the BEST moisturizer for acne-prone skin! It actually helps clear out your pores. It is non-irritating, all natural and just amazing. It has improved my skin, in fact, in the past several months of using it. I recommend it to anyone. And oh yeah, I have very acne-prone skin. If you search the acne boards you can find a thread i did from a few months ago about my acne skincare regimen, and jojoba oil is part of it. :)

I LOVE the Revlon Colorstay foundations. There are two kinds, and I have had nothing but success from both of them. Lightly moisturize and then blend, blend, blend...you will love it. It has never made me break out, and it covers everything perfectly! :) Cheers!
