I am also on 40mg of zocor daily,I was on 20 but when these numbers were known my doc went to 40,will this help? Also Can I eat nuts for snacks? What can I do and how bad is that number really? Something's not right here. You can't possibly have a total cholesterol of 167 when your LDL is 339.
TC= LDL + HDL + (triglycerides/5)
I would double check these numbers with your doctor. They can't be right.
Nuts are a healthy snack. But I would go easy on the other junk foods. A lot of snacks, such as cookies, cakes, doughnuts, crackers, etc., are often high in sugar and hydrogenated fats.

Thank you, You or someone else said that you have to divide something by 5 sorry I dont remember, But anyway your saying that these readings cannot be right? He told me on the phone and it was another doctor not my regular doc anyway is it possible he read it to me wrong?

Could it be possible that the 339 is the total cholestorol? and that 167 is the ldl and 24 is hdl? But if that were true, wouldnent those two numbers be ok? where does the 339 come from,possible they read it backwards? anyway I cant wait to call tommorow and ask again,this is driving me nuts! thanks so much for your patience and help! :angel:

Well, it's certainly possible that he read them to you wrong. But, in any case, you should call the doctor back and bring this to his attention. The numbers simply don't make sense. Also, when you call back, find out what your triglycerides are. An LDL of 339 seems pretty high to me, especially since you've already been taking 20mg Zocor.

Well, if your TC is 339, and your HDL is only 24, it would be difficult to accurately calculate the LDL. With an LDL of 167, that would mean that your triglycerides would be something like 740! Anytime triglycerides are above 300, a calculated LDL is often considered hard to determine.

wow, Your right.I have been on 20mg of zocor for a year now and that should have helped right? I will post tommorow morning after I find the trig.numbers.Something is not right here at all.I did want to ask however,they say the total number should be below or at 200,how can I have 167 and still be at rick? That number is good right?And to have trig.numbers of 740 wouldent I have to eat a pound or two of butter a day? I mean I like my steaks and burgers on the grill but I also eat salads and stuff too.This whole thing is just a shock to me.

It's always best to have your Doctor give or mail you a copy of all lab reports and tests for your records. You should never rely on someone just giving you the results over the phone.
Dietary intake of fats usually has little impact on cholesterol/lipid levels. Elevated triglycerides are associated with carbohydrate consumption and not fat intake.

Yes, you need to call your doctor and find out what the correct numbers are. When you find out what they are, including the triglyceride number, please let us know. Good Luck.

If the numbers were turned around backwards and 339 is your total and 24 is your HDL that's not good. Make sure you take the 40mg Zocor. It has done wonders for my numbers. I don't always do everything right when it comes to eating but I don't take those trips to Burger King. Nuts are a good snack but you can overdo it even when eating nuts as a snack. They are high in fat although some would say it's the good kind of fat.

I think the doctor read it to you wrong. I would double check. But regardless, I'd stop the late night trips to Burger King especially because nightime is when our bodies make the most cholesterol.
To raise your good cholesterol you need to add some type of exercise if you're not doing it already. If you're even a little overweight, lose the extra.
Lose the Burger King and junk food and add soy protein, fiber from fruits and things like kidney beans, and maybe some Benecol or Take Control in place of butter or margarine.
