I want to tell you a story I hope you don't mind. Last summer I moved to Illinois from New Jersey. I never had problems with my ears or allergy's before. Last fall my cheekbones hurt really bad, Like I got hit there, Then that stopped and my ears started to itch. It got worse and worse (The itching) I caught a cold in the winter and my ears got worse, It felt like someone was stabbing me in the ears. The insides felt like they were getting smaller and scaly. Then last spring I went to wal mart with my boyfriend. Out of no where I got dizzy, I had no idea what was going on I went to the pharmacist and he gave me sudafed. I took it and the dizziness went away the first day and gradually my ears got better, Not all the way but it was bearable, One month ago I caught another cold and I lost my voice, While I was sick I was dizzy. I thought that was just part of the cold and it would go away. Well, the cold went away but the dizziness got worse. Now I have post nasal drip, Itchy ears and dizziness And now sometimes my ears hurt and they pop sometimes , I tried sudafed a few weeks back and it made me feel even dizzier. So then I tried Tylenol sinus and that made me feel dizzier. I went to the doctor again told him my story and he said I Have inner ear caused by allergies caused by my cold (Does that make sense?) He gave me claritin and a decongestant. I have been taking the claritin since Sunday the 8 and today is Monday the 16 I still feel dizzy. I tried three times to take the decongestant pill and it made me dizzier. so I stopped taking them. Do you think this is allergy's and it will go away? Do you think I should Try taking the decongestant pills again even though they made me feel worse. If I scratch my ears it sounds like there is defenitly stuff in there. My boyfriend said their side effects and they will eventually go away. What do you think? Do you think the claritin alone will help me? I really cant stand the way they make me feel. Will I have this for the rest of my life? I don't have a doctor I don't have insurance and I tried to call the walk in that I went to and they wouldn't tell me anything. I feel like I am at the end of my rope, I just don't know what to do anymore. Sorry for coming here again but I just want to know what you guys think about my situation. I still cry everyday, I been trying to eat better. I don't eat full meals but I do eat. This morning for breakfast I had an ensure and a granola bar. For lunch I have one or two muffin bars and for dinner the same as lunch. The doctor took blood and said everything looks normal the only thing that he saw was I wasn't eating right. They took blood to check my electrolytes and stuff like that. Do I need help?

I had the same problem, but mine turned out to be a chronic sinus infection found on a CAT scan. Had to take antibiotics for 6 weeks to get rid of it. I also take Singulair. Good luck with it - I know how you feel!

Go to the pharmacy and get Chlor-Tremeton 12 hour tablets (12mg). This is the only medicine that helps me with my sinus/allergy-related dizziness/lightheadedness. It will take about 2-3 days to take full effect.

The medicine calms the vestibular system in the inner ears, in addition to the typical antihistamine effects. It will make you drowsy at first, but your body will adjust.

If this doesn't work, go to your ENT and get an endoscopy done. This will show if there is any bacteria in your sinuses. They may want to do a CT scan as well, just to be sure.

Does it help drain? I think that might be my problem, That I have fluid in my inner ear. I have been taking claritin for a week now and my ears are starting to hurt, they pop, click,it feels like I am on a plane. Also I dont want to be gross but, The post nasal drip seems like it is RUNNING Is it normal if you get a sore throat from post nasal drip,It hurts when I swallow, Also I think I have a swollen lyph node under my jaw. Can post nasal drip do that? Anyway I really hope I am on the right to recovery when it comes to dizzines. I can deal with the ears and sore throat for now I just can't deal with being dizzy! :dizzy:

Hi Leelee,

I feel really sorry for you cos I suffer from the same symptoms. I've always gotten mildly dizzy from colds and whatnot, but for the past 9 months the dizziness has NOT gone away (ie. 24/7) I too am at the end of my rope and have noticed there are a few people on this board with the same sort of symptoms. The thing that distresses me is that they don't seem to have found any sure fire way to cure their dizziness and I just can't imagine going through life like this. I'm already off work as it is! I can suggest that you get a sinus CT scan and take it to an ENT who can tell you whether your sinuses are abnormally inflaned and may be causing your eustachian tube to play up (I think that is what's wrong with me). And then they can set about trying to make the inflammation go down. I really feel for you though because it's not an easy road. Dizziness is so hard for doctors to understand because they can't SEE it or test for it (very well). And other people don't understand what's wrong with you because they can't SEE that you're dizzy either! Good luck and don't worry, it won't last for ever. I definitely have faith in that, everything in life changes and that includes our bodies. Nothing lasts for ever, and though that may suck for the good times, it's good to know the bad times won't last forever either :)

Hi Claire,
Thanks for your reply. I am so sorry you had to deal with this thing for 9 whole months! Thats horrible, Hopefully you get some releif soon. Do you think I have allergy's. I mean is that what it sound like? Do you have trouble taking decongestants. I never had a problem with them untill I got dizzy.

I totallly understand! Maybe my doc should have put me on antibiotics for 6 weeks as well. I'm still swollen and I think the only thing that will help is long term antibiotics to cure inflamed sinus passages. Oh, the dizzy's! I wish these ENT's understood a little better what to do about us and how to fix us!

I feel so much for anyone going through this. I am trying to get over pneumonia and an ear infection and the dizziness is driving me crazy. I have been diagnosed more than once over the years with anxiety, but 2 weeks ago the anxiety attack was so severe and was accompanied by extreme weakness; I ended up going to the ER (a place I swore I'd never go unless I was bleeding severely) with no insurance ($1,400 bill). I was given a 'Z pack' of antibiotic ($60) and Claritan D ($20). I feel better but still not well at all. I have shortness of breath so bad it freaks me out and this weird feeling in my head is simply indescribable (other than to say dizzy/light-headed). I had to put off starting school for 2 weeks but, now the 2 weeks is up and I have no choice except to go....I don't know how I'm going to be able to learn anything while feeling this way! I want to take something OTC for my allergies/pneumonia/ear infection but, I'm not sure what I should take and I can't afford another trip to the doctor. Anyone have a suggestion for me?

I hear you Halls. My sinuses are still giving me problems as well. An endoscopy doesn't reveal any infection, but a CT Scan shows possible infection in the Maxillary sinuses. I only get yellow gunk after irrigating with at least 500mg of water.

I'm trying really hard to stay off the antibiotics, but I still have pressure/headaches, and bags under my eyes. I'm worried this is going to go on for years.

Chlor-Tremeton got rid of the dizziness, but a side-effect is (at least I think) a really dry throat and mouth. I'm going through a lot of water. Does anyone else get really dried out from antihistamines? It's so bad it makes it hard to swallow sometimes.

I live in Tennessee, terrible pollen and awful humidity. My allergies act up worse than ever and I get a really bad headache everytime it rains (and it seems to rain a lot lately). Seems like my allergies are worse now than ever and I've lived here all my life....
