First of all, I have hypothyroidism with high cholesterol. I was taking lipitor 10mg. a day. I developed terrific pain all over my legs and feet. It was hard for me to even walk. I got in to see the doc, actually the FNP. Told her that I was in terrible pain. She told me to stop taking the lipitor for a month.
I have been off of it for a few days and already I feel better. There is no pain in my legs. I do have some pain in my upper back though.
So I guess I will not be taking any kind of cholesterol lowering drug. I tell you I was in agony.
Not everyone will have that problem. I read somewhere that people that are hypo must be watched closely by their doctor.

I tried taking two different kinds of high cholesterol medicine and I got a terrible back ache from each. I guess it's not the back, it's your kidneys that are hurting because these statin drugs put your kidneys under stress. I'm not going to take another drug. If I have to go from high cholesterol, I'd rather go early than suffer for the rest of my life with that pain.

Yeah I was very surprised what that stuff can do to you. I actually believe that I can even think clearer now.
My pain now is in my shoulders. If it is in your lower back that means the pain is coming from your kidneys correct?
I think I am going to get me some of those omega capsules or whatever they are called.
Thanks for replying

Yep just had the same problem with Lipitor---was not sure---so stuck with it for about 3 1/2 months---stopped it last Sat---feel better--but shoulder area still sore---but seems to be getting better each day---I'll have to lower the numbers with diet and exercise---did that once before---so back to it I go!

My shoulders are still hurting. Just have to keep taking my pain pills that my FNP gave me. I hope this doesn't last too much longer.
It feels like weakness and pain. I wish I would have studied about taking statins with hypothyroidism before. Did some studying on it and the two do not mix.

Lady50,
Are you taking Coenzyme Q10? If not, then you may want to consider taking ~100mg per day. It may help speed your recovery. The statins may have caused a depletion in your CoQ10 level. A shortage of CoQ10 may cause muscle pain and weakness.

Thank you for your advice. Is this Q10 very expensive? Do you think I could get something from my doctor to help? I would just have to pay a small copay if I had a prescription.
Thank you Betty

Betty,
Since Coenzyme Q10 is sold over the counter, I don't THINK you can be reimbursed for any of it's cost. It's not a cheap supplement. I order the 100mg Q-Gel brand for my father. It costs $41.00 for a bottle of 60. But prices do vary among different brands. I believe Zip2play gets his from BJ's wholesale club. I think he said he pays $28.00 for 120 100mg capsules. I really don't think you can do much better than that. So, if you belong to any of these wholesale price clubs, you may be able to get CoQ10 at the lowest price.

Thank you Arizona. I found some at the Dollar Store. It was $5.00 for 100 of them at 30mg. Silly me didn't buy them in fear of there quality.

Well, if you are going to buy them, I hope that the bottle at least has an expiration date stamped on it.
