I need help in finding out where to turn for a diagnosis of my husband's severe leg pain and weakness. It is sporatic, about twice a month, and lasts for 2 to 3 days. At its worst he can hardly stand up. He says it is like having a thousand pounds pushing down on his legs. It eventually eases up with rest and absolutely no activity.
He has been to a neuroligist and an arthritist specialist, had a CAT scan and an MIR of his spine. Both show only signs of normal aging, nothing unusual.
We are wondering if it has any relation to his other medical problem. He has had severe cronic chest pain for over 4 years and was diagnosed with Emphasyma. He had an operation to remove 1/3 of both of his lungs, which helped his breathing but not his pain. The Surgeon assured us that there is no pain with this disease and he is at a lost for a cause.
A pain clinic has him a on Oxycontin and Gabapentin so that he can get through the day. We feal living on pain killers without knowing the cause is not the way to go. Anyone with a clue as to where to look next, please give us help.

I had the similiar problem and it didn't go away, I ended up in a wheelchair for 6 months but it was in fact caused by the lumbar being herniated. I would get out of bed and fall to the floor, my legs felt like I was treading water for a hour and then someone put a led brick on them.
For what it's worth, always keep in mind that MRI's are not 100% accurate ever. There could be a problem and it doesn't show.
I honestly don't know if it could be a result of his previous surgeries however I would suggest he get a second opinion, the worst thing that will happen is they will tell you they don't know. If you are really lucky, you'll find out whats actually going on.
