View Full Version : will high sodium have an instant effect on bp?

Couple of month ago my bp was an ugly 155/110. I have been working out regularly and taking 80mg/12.5mg of diovan hct which brought my bp down to 144/80ish. My doc didn't like the the 144 reading so he prescribed 160mg/25mg. I started to closely monitor my sodium intake and with the increased dosage my bp was an awesome 117/71.
For the last 2 weeks my wife and I have been on vacation and I haven't been as diligent in monitoring my sodium intake, consequentially my bp has been averaging 142/71.
We just got back from Vaca and I will start montioring my intake again. I was just wondering if the sodium would affect my BP that quickly or is something else going on?

thanks.

Increased sodium intake can affect your BP by the next DAY if you're salt sensitive.

Were you getting the higher readings ON vacation or upon your return? If the latter, it may not only be the extra salt you were ingesting, but the mere fact that vacation is over (sob :() and the realization that your back to the old grindstone!

Go back to being a good boy regarding the sodium ;) and see what the next few days look like.

My boss used to lament about how her bp was great on vacation, but would creep back up as soon as she got back to the real world.
