MydeadSea 08-24-2004, 07:43 PM I have super curly hair.. the only problem is, If Its hot, or cold, or humid, or nice out, it frizzes. if I brush it, or style it, or touch it, or look at it, it frizzes. I've spent 20-30 minutes straightening my bangs and about 10 minutes after I stop, they curl back up again  I was wondering if any body knows if any good products/techniques that would keep my hair straight, atleast for the day?? Also, has anyone tried the at home straightening products, and if so, how'd that go? (my hair is about to my cheek, and to have it straightened professionally is about $45-50  ..not worth it for such short hair) Actually, I'd even settle for a product that'd make my curls nice, instead of frizzy, any advice would be greatly appreciated....I hate my hair!!!
maak823 08-25-2004, 08:37 AM First- if your hair is that curly- let them curl, no need to cause the damage and not to mention the frustration of the straightening process. Try the "Curl" line by Matrix (Biolage) its a good system and has a nice styling creme which really helps to reduce the frizz.
lunachick03 08-25-2004, 12:58 PM I think you should try to correct the frizz problem before you decide to get your hair straightened. Getting your hair chemically straightened will more than likely do more damage to your hair...not worth it! The best product line I have ever used for my extremely long wavy hair is ouidad! Ouidad has a conditioner called Deep Treatment...it's expensive but it's worth every cent. Hair that is naturally curly/ wavy tends to be much drier because the hair lacks moisture. I try to do a deep treatment on my hair once a week so that it stays healthy and frizz free. Once your hair retains enough moisture, you will notice less frizz and your hair will be much easier to manage. How often do you condition your hair now?? Also, what product(s) have you tried? hope this helps!! Let me know
MydeadSea 08-25-2004, 06:27 PM I'd be okay with my curly hair if it didnt frizz all the time. I've tried this syrum stuff that says put a little in your hand and run it through your hair (blow dry straight or air dry for nice curls....I forget what its called.....John something) Also, I condition my hair every day with pantene pro-v. I use like a handfull every time, and i wash my hair as soon as i get in the shower, rinse, put the conditioner on, and leave it in for the remainder of my shower (usually 10-15 minutes)...Ive tried suave gel products for curls..uhhmmm....I've tried different types of pomade. ....my hair is curly/frizzy, and Fine.....so ..so far I havent found anything that works for me
Kayley 08-25-2004, 09:26 PM It sounds like your hair is just like mine. My hair is curly, tends to frizz and fine too. I have tried lots and lots of shampoos and products and I have found that the ones you buy in the store just don't work. It is well worth it to buy salon products when you have hair like ours. About six months ago I started using Matrix Biolage Ultra Hydrating shampoo and conditioner and it works great and it doesn't stop working like so many others. I recently tried the Matrix Smoothing shampoo and conditioner and I also bought the deep conditioner and it works good too. For styling products, I like Silk Therapy by Farouk and after I dry my hair I put in some Sebastian Taffy to separate and get the "piecy" look. I had so many products, my cabinets were full of them, and I gave them all to my daughter the other day because I finally found the products that work for me. Let me know if you decide to try them and what you think, ok?
Good luck!
Kayley ;)
producttramp 08-26-2004, 07:56 AM Silk Therapy does work magic -smoothes things out great-even if you leave it curly, your hair is transformed. I tried the knockoff of that for kicks and it doesnt compare get the real one
Another bunch of products are the beyond the zone ones from sally beauty. I like the stoked shampoo, busted conditioner, last call deep conditioner and the split mender leave in as well as sexy sauce and noodlehead styling products. They are a knockoff version of tigi bed head and others. this month is buy 2 get 1 free there :)
MydeadSea 08-26-2004, 02:52 PM Thanks ladies :bouncing: I'll probably end up trying ALL your suggestions.....maybe if I do all in the same day i'll have awesome hair:D. I'll letcha know the first time I try one
armadillo pie 08-27-2004, 08:17 PM After several years of wearing my curly hair straight and totally drying it out and ruining it, I decided to go a la natural again. I do not wash my hair more then once or twice a week ( it is extremely dry from all the processing) and I deep condition it in the shower and then put on sik therapy after and another leave in conditioner over that. I saturate my hair but when it dries it is soft and not frizzy. In between washes I sometimes wet my hair in the shower and only add conditioner to it instead of shampoo which leave it frizz free . Silk therapy is good but it does have alcohol in it and if your hair is colored it can dry it out more over the long run.
Angelbaby03 08-29-2004, 10:27 AM I have the same kind of hair!
STEP 1 : WASH HAIR AND USE ALOT OF CONDITIONER.
STEP 2: SEPERATE HAIR INTO FOUR PARTS (HOLD THEM UP WITH HAIR TIES)
STEP 3: TAKE A BRUSH AND BRUSH EACH SECTION AND HOLD IT THERE WHILE BLOWDRYING.
STEP 4: GET A STRAIGHTING IRON, AND IRON THE PART THAT U JUST FINISHED DRYING
STEP 5: TWIST THE NEWLY STRAIGHTED PIECE TO HOLD IN MOISTURE.
STEP 6: DO THE OTHER PIECES THE SAME WAY./
STEP 7: USE FRIZZEASE HAIR SERUM TO DEFRIZZ ANY FLYAWAYS.
armadillo pie 08-29-2004, 11:05 PM I find it really hard to section off my hair and also to blowdry it without my wrists/ shoulders hurting or being uncomfortable ( especially in the back areas). Also no matter how much I try to blow dry it straigtht it never comes out as nice as a salon blow out- any other suggestions?
MydeadSea 08-30-2004, 06:17 PM I use tons of conditioner.. Also, I have a straightening iron around the house somewhere( couldnt tell you where though), but my hair stays straight for about 5 minutes n then it curls right back up again. Oh yeah....n i HAVE to wash my hair every day..i have the type of hair that, I'll wash it in the morning and by night time its oily already. you know those round brushes that turn automatically? well I bought one of those and i used it on my hair today (i've had it for a while, just never bothered) and I held it so that it was pulling my hair out (you can turn it 2 dif directions, one pulls the hair away, one curls it under) ....and it actually straightened my hair  I didnt use heat or anything..the only problem iiiiiiiiiis, it poofed on me, but i just have that kind of hair, so You ladies w/ NON- frizzy hair might wanna give that a try. I think if i had taken the time to ease it down w/ product, it woulda been good. Anyway thanks for all the suggestions again. Im gonna try the conditioner that everyone's been suggesting.
p.s- Yeah my hair is dyed, but its comming out. i was a hairdyeaholic and for like the past 4-5 yrs, my hair has been a different color every month (and i use permanent hair dye, not good :nono: ) but i'm letting it grow out, I'm trying to go a long time w/out dying it again.
eminemworshipper 09-01-2004, 02:05 PM There's this treatment u can get at hairdressers (i have had it)....it was like a hair mask they put on...it weighed your hair down and basically made it more manageable...maybe trying this out will help with the problem?
Superstar 09-05-2004, 08:43 PM My hair is really curly, really thick and is long upto my hips! everytime i went to get my hair done to be straightened they would always put some sort of spray or creme thats supposed to keep my hair from frizzing but they never worked coz as soon as I went outside, whether its hot, cold or humid (its always humid) my hair would get really frizzy and it'd start to get wavy again. I have to walk to school for 10 minutes and before i leave home i blow dry my bangs straight and by the time i get to school my whole hair is frizzy and my bangs are curly again.
I saw this commercial on tv about a hair product that can make your hair not frizz up anymore and i thought what the heck, and i tried it, and it really works. Its called Frizz-Ease By John Frieda, and the 1st time i used it i let my hair dry naturally curly after applying the product to my hair and i was surprised to see it dried up w/o any frizz!
There are usually 2 different bottles sold for 3 different types of hair. the small bottle is $5 and the big bottle has a lil more and is $10 (totally worth it!). when u buy it you have to buy it according to your hair type or it might not work the way you want it to. like if your hair is really thin and easy to handle then you would buy the bottle labled for "Thin" hair, and if your hair is very coarse and not so easy to handle with then you would buy the one labled for "Coarse" hair (it comes in a purple bottle), and if your hair is very thick and right in between easy and hard to manage you would just buy the original one (labled "Original" of course). if your hair is short you wouldn't need alot of serum unless you want to but if your hair is really long you would prolly be using half the bottle or the entire bottle if you buy the small $5 bottle of serum. This product works great and I recommend it to anyone who is in despirate needs to ease their frizzy locks!! :)
MydeadSea 09-05-2004, 08:49 PM Alright ladies...Update time. You've all given me a bunch of good ideas, so thanks:) My mother was at walmart a while back so I called her and asked her to pick me up some silk therapy, but she couldnt find it:( However, she came home with some stuff, and I tried it, and it actually worked AWESOMELY....its a gray 4 oz. tube, and it says
JOHN FRIEDA
FRIZZ-EASE
Secret Weapon
flawless finishing cream
Step 5, Finish and Shine
..Its in that order on the tube....the step 5 is a red square with step 5 in white writing on the inside (I'm only describing it because i know how hard it is to find one specific thing in the sea of hair products that most stores have). So, if you're suffering from frizzy hair like i am, you might wanna give it a try. I put about a quarter size glob in my hand and scrunched it through my hair and it turned it instantly from frizz to curls. It costs about $5. (here, prices may vary elsewhere) Let me know if anyone tries it k?
MydeadSea 09-05-2004, 08:53 PM I think me and Superstar posted a reply about the exact same thing at the exact same time :) how Ironic. :bouncing:
blessedNways 09-07-2004, 09:56 PM I have the same kind of hair as you. It's super curly and tends towards frizziness and it's thin. Frizz ease is good for a hair serum and Biologe is best for shampoo/conditioner. I also use biologe gel and it works wonders. I always thought I was cursed with curly hair, but now I've learned to love it. Some more advise is that sometimes my hair gets too used to a product, not the biologe shampoo/cond/gel, but the hair serum. I switch from frizz ease to sebastian no.9 sometimes. It's not really a serum, it's more lotiony than greasy, but it is excellent in place of a serum. (Use it after the shower but b/f the gel)
MydeadSea 09-14-2004, 03:38 PM Thats a good idea, to switch back and forth between products. I used to find something I loved and I'd use it every day n pretty soon the fabulous results werent so fabulous...instead of puting 2+2 together, I just blamed it on the product and never used it again. oh well, you live you learn
Yommy 09-14-2004, 04:08 PM Hi!
Well, like another girl posted, I had thick, coarse, curly hair down past my hips and couldn't do a thing with it. I just had it donated not even a week ago, and now my hair is probably just a couple inches longer than yours. I soon realized that easy ponytails were no longer an option. My husband bought me a new hair dryer (with a diffuser and a concentrator) as well as a straightening iron for my birthday. The first thing I did was come home and try them out on my new haircut. I used all the products I was supposed to and dried and straightened in sections (due to the thickness of my hair, this took more than an hour and a half.) When I was finished, I had straight, frizz-free hair, but it was still so poofy! I finally decided to give up on my dream of silky, board straight hair, and to my amazement, found a new hairstyle that looks absolutely perfect and takes about 5 minutes to style, NO TOUCHUP NECESSARY!!! Once I finally decided to work with my curls, I found products that make them beautiful. For one, my stylist reccommended Biolage shampoo and conditioning balm. It seems to work ok, but I've never really noticed a difference in the way shampoos work on my hair. However, in response to all those praising frizz-ease, they are absolutely right! I use the ex-strength formula serum (step 3). When I get out of the shower, I squeeze all the water I can out of my hair. Then I apply the serum. (Forget about how much the bottle says to use, on difficult hair you need to figure it out for yourself. For me, it takes about 25-30 pumps from the little bottle.) I run that through my hair then get out of the shower, dry off and brush my hair. I also squeeze out any residual water with a towel. For step four, they make many different types of products, but I've had success with the wind-down relaxing cream. It says it's for straightening, but if you use about 4-5 pumps and run it through your hair and scrunch, it dries beautifully curly. After that, I use my blow dryer with the diffuser on high heat and high speed for about 60 seconds. Voila! 5 minutes, perfect hair. If I'm having a particularly bad hair day, I'll add some of the flawless finisher just to be safe. Plus, it works well if you do have midday frizz! And my number one FAVORITE thing about this product: unlike gels, mousses, and hairsprays which leave your hair sticky, hard, and gross, this one leaves it soft! For the first time in the three years that we've been together, my husband can run his hands through my hair without them getting stuck!!! Plus, it doesn't even mess up the 'do too bad!
Hope I can help. Good Luck, and when you finally figure out what works for you, you'll feel so much better about life in general!

studcake 09-19-2004, 10:21 PM I have naturally wavy, frizzy, thick, and ANNOYING hair. I used to blow dry it into an afro every morning and try to curl it... It looked horrible.. lol Well... My sister's friend had a straightener... and it seemed to work.. and my sister got one and needless to say, I was using it before she was! It works WONDERS!!! Other straighteners don't even come close to doing what this one does! And the plus side.. they're only about $20!!! It's called "Hot Tools Professional" and I got mine from Great Clips!!! I'm sure other salons have them, but trust me, you want to get one!!!

patsy7 09-20-2004, 08:01 PM I also had super curly hair, in fact I was on 20/20 about a month ago on the story about Thermal Reconditioning. it was the best thing I had ever done. The lovely Loons also helped me with lots of great information. Don't be mislead on the negative information on this process. it has changed my life forever!
razzelspaz 09-20-2004, 08:10 PM Oh gosh hun, I know your pain. I've done everything to my hair-I've used every product out there. I spent 400 dollars getting my hair professionally straightened, and even THAT didn't work.
But I'll make this short- I don't believe there to be any miracle product for us folks with frizzy and curly hair. However, if you want to go for the curly, yet tamed look, look into a product called "Making Waves" by Graham Webb. As well, possibly try products with Kertain Mist in them, that tends to put your hair into better condition. Hope you find a good product!
MydeadSea 12-07-2004, 05:19 PM woops, havent checked in on this post for a while. Thanks for all the good ideas ladies:) Im using some frizz ease stuff that works really well, and also I bought this stuff called 'Curl booster, fixative gel' ....its pretty cool...unless you use too much..then it jus makes me look like a grease ball, but then again most products will do that if you abuse the use .
nolovenoglory 01-03-2005, 08:25 PM there is an answer to straightening curly/frizzy hair, first of all if you are the type of person that hates putting products in your hair struggling with hairdryers and roundbrushes, straightening irons etc. YOu should try the new service that is offered in salons it really sounds too good to be true but it really works, people i know have gotten it done and absolutley love the result. There are two different services cold smoothing which if you have curly hair it completley gets rid of the frizz but keeps your curls and makes your hair more soft and manageable, the other service is called heat straightening, this service is a little time consuming but also works, if you have curly hair or wavy frizzy hair and long for smooth pin straight locks then this is the service for you. Both these services are pretty pricy and have to be retouched to maintan the style, i think you have to go in for retouches every 6 months or so. The heat straightening ranges in the 300 area depending on length of the hair and the cold smoothing ranges in the 150 area again depending on length. Both of these services do not damadge the hair. These smoothing systems are offered by opti smooth.
i too have wavy frizzy hair that has to be straighted and i struggle with straightening irons and bad hair days I personally have not gotten it the service done but i will soon. (after i get my paycheck that is)
- hope i helped

1plumppup 01-05-2005, 01:15 AM Ladies, ladies!
Please try the Bodiphier it's a life saver! Smooths curls, tames frizz. You can blow it dry smooth and straight or air dry for beautiful curls! I discovered this about 3 months ago and have been raving about it to everyone since it works on all hair types, and if you can apply conditioner you can apply this stuff. I simply did a Google search to find the product it's affordable- about $20.00 per kit, and it will last 2-3 applications depending on length. Best of all no frizzing in humid weather or rainny days!!
nolovenoglory 01-06-2005, 10:33 PM does it only last untill you wash it out???? or does it last longer?
1plumppup 01-06-2005, 10:49 PM It is not supposed to wash out, but you will need to touch up new growth about every six weeks to two months- depending on how fast your hair grows. So it doesn't wash out- it says that it is permenent, but I don't know yet because I have used it a couple of times now on new growth and I think its great. I can blow dry straight and it stays straight- even on rainy humid days. Or, I can let it air dry for looser, bouncier curls. The directions say that it will make your hair straighter the more you comb it straight while processing. I don't comb it at all, just apply and kind of smooth it back with my hands for about 20 mins. Then rinse it out- ALL Done!!
JuiciCouture 01-06-2005, 11:11 PM Hey all- I came across this post, and thought I should add my 2 cents. I am an Aveda Stylist and I have a few clients with this type of hair.
Not to bore you with information, but theres a bunch of different hair types and results they have. This particular type is coarse, curly hair.. a thick cuticle that tends to explode as it comes out of the follicle..which causes it to be constantly frizzy. The idea for this hair, is to either change it chemically (Potentially damaging if not done by the right person), or finding products to calm it down.
Thermal Reconditioning is very pricey, but it is a GodSend to curly-heads. I do this procedure and I think its one of the most fantastic chems on the planet. In my salon, It costs about 100$ an hour..sometimes more or less depending on curl and length. This procedure doesnt necessarily mean you wont have to use products and/or a flat iron to achieve silky hair- But I can guarantee you will have pin straight hair the moment a flat iron touches it, and you wont need as much force to straighten it. (It also wont frizz in humidity, near the beach, etc)
A suggestion about products and haircare tips.. When you wash your hair- just wash the scalp area..when you finish, just run the suds down the rest of your hair to avoid overdrying. Then do the opposite with conditioner. (Shampoo is for the scalp, Conditioner is for the Hair.) Next, apply a product called Wella CrossTrainer. Its a heavy cream that improves the condition of the hair (acting similar to a leave in, without the added oiliness. Also it straightens the hair in heat, and will define curl if you let it airdry). Then, apply an oil (oil is extremely important to the hair shaft) (Bain De Terre makes a product called Recovery Complex.) Then, let it airdry, or you can blow dry it straight. Next, you should buy a flat iron that is full ceramic plates- such as the Chi Iron. (Once again, it is expensive but ive had the same one for over 2 years and it works amazing on my naturally curly hair. My hair is as straight as Avril Lavignes..but naturally it is a frizzy mess.) The full ceramic plate allows the hair to be heated evenly, which is less damaging. Also, metal plates cause more frizz by breaking and/or damaging the hair.
Well- Good luck, and give a few different things a try.
jackolantern 03-16-2005, 05:15 AM Although managing curls sounds like the healthier option, I'm still interested in straightening my hair, at least sometimes.
I just finished reading a bunch of reviews for flat irons on epinions. I was shocked to see complaints that the CHI iron was falling apart after or year or two. The plates just fell out of the iron according to one or two reviews. I noticed some reviews on the website said that after a while irons became less hot or at least took longer. One time someone straightened my hair with a CHI iron. It worked great, but I did notice steam coming up. Do they all do that??
Anyway I just figured I'd throw out that info about the potential hazards. I myself have a cheap flat iron which is probably only ceramic coated. It doesn't work very well and when I try to blow dry with a round brush my hair typically looks thick and unhealthy, rather then slimmer and smooth/shiny, healthier. I'm interested in finding something else, but it seems they all cost an arm and a leg. I don't really want to invest in anything, at least nothing expensive, without more than a few months-year review about it.
suncats 03-17-2005, 08:03 AM Redken has a new line called Smooth Down. Try the Heat Glide serum, as well as the whole line. This works better than any other product I've used--and I am a stylist. Personally, I'm not a big fan of straighteners. Yes they can relax the curl but the trade off is funky feeling hair that is even drier than ever. I've read that the Japanese thermal straightening is good for making the hair feel better, but it is very time consuming and costly. Like a 4-5 hour process at $100 an hour at most places. It is not for ethnic hair.
