If you're a runner and running in the heat, you should try to go with gatorade during (if it's a long run) and/or after a run. You really run the risk of dehydration and should consume much more fluid. I loose about 4 lbs of water per hour of running, so that's a quart of water I should drink extra. This could affect your energy levels. Another thing that works well for me is that I drink about 12 ozs of water/gatorade around 10am. This helps me get through the 3pm sleepiness.

If you run hard, try adding a protein supplement, maybe 25g - 50g's per day, but not right before a run (protein requires a lot of energy for digestion).

How many hours before exercising should you have a protein drink? Sometimes I have protein drinks about an hour before I play basketball, but I'm not sure if it helps me have more energy. I actually today had two servings of a protein drink about an hour before playing and I thought my energy level was the lowest it's been in a long time. (Maybe it's just a coincidence, though)

Well, protein drinks aren't for energy. They're for providing the muscles with resources for repair after exertion. Carb drinks are for energy beforen during, and after aerobic exercise. Protein drinks are for muscle recovery after exercise. So, if you drink 35g's of protein an hour before playing ball, your body is spending energy digesting it (and protein burns 30% of its calories in digestion) and not using it for sport. If you're going anaerobic (building strength), try a protein shake before bed, too, as your body repairs itself while you sleep. Protein at bedtime provides the amino acids the muscles use to grow.

Also, ensure you're getting extra b-vitamins. Someone I work with takes a B-12 for energy.

I drink Red Bull. It has 80% b-12 in it. (whatever that means). I was a lso getting b-12 shots once a week but now I am taking the lozenges that disolve underneath your tongue. The Red Bull really gets me going. I get a lot done and I have the energy to exercise and make it through the day. I buy a 4 pack at the grocery store or at the nearest convenient store.

Where can I find the B-12 that dissolve under your tongue? Do they really help with energy?

One of my co-workers takes a B-12 in the early afternoon and he says it really helps him stay alert. I think it's a 50mg pill, though, I can't be sure.

btw, creatine is for muscle building, not necessarily for energy.
