My 5 year old daughter has asthma. This summer has been plain terrible for her, she has coughed every second of every day. She has been tested for allergys and has none, she has had her heart tested and it was fine (doc said coughing could be a sign of a heart problem) but it was not.

She coughs about ever 5 sec, just a little dry cough, it's not a deep cough, but more a upper cough. Sometimes when she coughs she says that her chest "feels funny mommy" They have told me the cough is due to her severe asthma.

She is on Pulmicort, Albuterol in the neb, and an albuterol inhaler when we are out of the house.

What other meds for asthma (not cough meds) could be given to a child who coughs? Does her airways need to be opened up more or something? I feel so bad for her even though most of the time the cough does not bother her at all.

It's just cough. cough. cough. all day long. What to do?

Hi ... when my daughter was small she had symptoms similar to what you are describing. She was constantly having this little cough and clearing her throat in spite of all the usual asthma meds. Dr finally put her on a nasal cortisone spray (which was interesting to get into a 5 year old) but it helped a lot. I think the root of the problem was drainage from her sinus down the back of her throat.

Yeah, I'd say that it could be due to Post Nasal Drip...might want to talk to the doc about that...does she have allergies or anything? I know when my allergies are acting up really bad, like in the winter, I cuogh all the time...but now the doc says I have asthma...so maybe that would be the reason I coughed all winter...but I'm not sure. Considering I would hack up some snot every now and again...

Xopenex works great for my son with Asthma. Talk to your doctor about it!

Hi,
I also have this very problem with my asthma. Have you tried allergy testing? If so also consider GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease). During the night acid can reflux into you esophogas and irritate your asthma causing chest tightness and constant coughing. To test this theory, try Prilosec OTC. Worked for me!
