Hi everyone! I know this board is about asthma, but I didn't see one about vocal chord dysfunction, so I figured this would be the next-best place to post my questions.
First, do any of you have it in addition to asthma? Or were any of you or anyone you know originally diagnosed as having asthma and then told instead that it was VCD?
I was recently diagnosed with VCD and am anxious about the speech therapy and how well it will or won't work. I've researched it quite a bit on-line (not that there is much to choose from) and not been very encouraged. Any info you have and will share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I am sorry I don't but I am curious as to your story. How did you get diagnosed with VCD and what was happening to you. The reason I am asking is because I also posted here about my daughter.

I know there was someone on here not too long ago- always posting about how horrible her breathing was & how they could never find the right meds for her & nothing ever helped. She was diagnosed w/ VCD, and saw huge improvement. Since she hasn't been posting lately on here i'm gonna assume she's doing well=).
Look for a few pages back from byrdwoman.. that's who it was. Those should help you out a bit=).

I have been diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction as well as asthma, but was told there was little I could do about the VCD except for breathing exercises. A speech pathologist taught me to inhale with my nose, then to breathe out very slowly through pursed lips. I don't know if it has helped because my asthma causes enough problems that I can't tell what else is going on. I was told by experts at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver that many people have VCD and don't know it and that it often mimics asthma symptoms.

Don't know if it's the same , but have a friend with Spasmodic dysphonia (vocal cord) she can't speak above a whisper. They first said it was asthma...but turned out not to be. She has done the botox treatments and speech therapy, nothing has worked......

I have a friend who was misdiagnosed as having severe asthma for many years. Turned out she had VCD, also very severe. In addition to the speech therapy she has botox injections and in an emergency they give her a helium/oxygen mix to breathe. She has improved greatly since getting a proper diagnosis. The strange thing is she was finally diagnosed when we spent a week together in the same hospital room, supposedly both for asthma. Having the two of us side by side for a week it started to become apparent that there were some subtle but significant differences in our symptoms. They finally did some tests to figure out which of us had asthma and which had 'something else.' The something else turned out to be VCD.

Hi
I'm waiting to see if I have VCD alongside my brittle asthma. Have had loads of tests done and definately have asthma but they think I have VCD too, I had some speech therapy in Australia and the lady was really nice, it's a lot to do with focusing on specific muscles in your upper airways and relaxation techniques.
It does seem to help a little.
Take care
