I keep reading all of this different information on hpv and i just have a question. a few years ago -about 2.5- i had an abnormal pap. turned out to be hpv. my dr did a colposcopy i guess its called - a biopsy- and that was it. i never had any of the freezing or leeps done like anyone else has said. at least I dont think so- if those are different from the biopsy? I have gone every 6 months for a pap since and they have continuely come back normal since.
Now.... Does that mean that i have a low grade version of it - since i never had any other procedures done? If they came back high grade wouldnt some other procedure have been done?
Just curious bc now im confused as to what extent i have this now. I didnt know there was so many different procedures for this until i found this board... and now am somewhat confused.
Any insight woud be greatly appreciated.

HPV can cause low grade dysplasia (abnormal/precancerous cells). Dysplasia often regresses on it's own which is most likely what happened to you. You would definitly know if you had freezing or leep done. I had a leep done yesterday in the hospital. There is many different strands of hpv that can cause different levels of dysplasia. Usually the doctor orders hpv dna testing when your pap comes back abnormal to see which strand you have. I suggest asking your Doctor for the details next time you seem them for your own peace of mine.

I also had abnormal cells due to HPV. I had a colposcopy because I had a cervical erosion - they did a biopsy to check for abnormal cells, and treated the erosion with loop diathermy. A few weeks later I was contacted to say that the biopsy showed up abnormal cells dues to HPV, and that these abonrmal cells would have been removed when they removed the erosion.

However, all my smear tests since them have been clear, and I no longer have HPV. So my understanding is that HPV is a virus that causes abnormal cells, but when it goes, so do the abnormal cells. In other words, your body fought off HPV - and it has now gone leaving no abnormal cells. (I believe they sometimes do not treat abnormal cells due to HPV, but keep an eye on them to see if they go away or get worse).

Hope this (kind of) helps.

Thanks....
I have been reading so many different things on here regarding hpv and it got me thinking and questioning some things.
Its crazy that so many people have this and a lot of people dont know anything about it until they get it(me included)....
Anyway, thanks again

I just checked out the NHS website (I'm in the UK) - and if HPV shows up on a smear, but with only mildly abnormal cells (or no abnormal cells), they ask you to come back for another PAP after 6 months to see if there has been any changes. It says that HPV often goes away by itself - so treatment is not always necessary.

Glad that's clear in my head now!!

Make sure that you keep going for your pap smears. Don't be afraid to ask the doctor any questions.

HPV is very common and it is transferrable even by using a condom.

I had HPV a few years ago. My pap came back as LOW-GRADE and had a biopsy. My doctor new exactly what it was even though he sent it out for so may testings. He said it could go away on its own or can develop into cancer. He had my fiance to go and get tested as well. His came back normal. He did not contract it THANK GOD !! My doctor said he didn't think he would of contracted the desease due to the fact it was so low grade.

I cought it even by using a condom.

I had a LEEP done right after that. The pap smear that I had right after the LEEP(which by the way was done in the doctors office) came back abdnormal. That was expected due to the fact of resadue. If the next pap would come back abdnormal, I would have to of had another LEEP done.
Thank god I was fine and have been ever since.

If you have to have a LEEP done don't worry. It wasn't bad at all. Actualy the biopsy was the worst part !! The LEEP was a breeze.

HPV is SO COMMON. For instance, me, my sister, and my brother all had it!!
Oh and by the way, it didn't change anything between me and my fiance...we have been married over a year now !!!

Just For Your Info. Once You Get Hpv..you Never Ever Get Rid Of It... It Is A Virus That Stays In Your Blood Stream And Can Pop Up At Anytime In Your Life..for Instance If You Are Sick Or Stressed It Is More Likely To Come Back. But Once You Have It You Always Have It. You Are Always A Carrier Of It. You Guys Were Talking About It Like It Goes Away. It Doesnt ...the Symptoms Just Go Away.

That is true. They say it can always pop up again.
Or it may never. For instance my sister had it when she was about 19 years old. Her boyfriend had it as well. My sister had a freezing done, and she is now in her mid 30's, has not developed it again, and has had 4 beautiful healthy children.

The question I have, is if it is in your blood stream wouldn't it pass on to the children?? What about her husband?? Her paps have been normal ever since. So has mine. My fiance at the time who is now my husband never even contracted it.

So what does it do?? Does it lay dormant in your system until if ever it decides to pop up again??

In response to a previous post - it IS possible to be rid of HPV. It MAY stay in the body for months or even years, lying dormant. But your immune system CAN fight it off (and once you have had it, eventually immunity builds against that particular strain, so you cannot catch it again). I have been told this by my gynaecologist and also read it on many medical sites on the net.

The NHS website has information (UK National Health Service) which explains when abnormal cells due to HPV are and are not treated. It also explains that the body is able to 'clear itself' of the HPV virus. Hope it helps.

HPV will always be in your system. You can only clear, or regress the effects (warts, dysplasia - dependent on the strand). However you will always be a carrier of the virus - as are most sexually active people. Even though you carry the virus you may never show signs of it. Immune system, diet, stress levels, ect all come into play.

HPV that causes cervical dysplasia in women rarely affects men. Penile dysplasia is very rare and hpv without dysplasia in men is very hard to test for.

was just going to say what kristina said - you do not ever 'get rid' of it (boy I wish you could!)

You CAN get rid of the abnormal cells, symptoms, and all that. But like someone else said the virus will remain, even if its dormant and you never get a symptom or an abnormal pap ever again. Some strains are very minor and some are linked to cancer and high grade abnormalities. Some progress slow, some progress fast. But it never goes away!

I dont know what doctor said that or where you read that but its incorrect. And that kind of info might lead to people thinking they are 'cured' and pass it on to others. Check out any of the major medical sites and you'll get the correct info

If you take a look at reputable, government health websites, you will see they say that HPV CAN disappear. It is quite clear.

That is just incorrect. It can lay dormant, and stop causing abnormal paps, and be that way for many years but it WILL NEVER GO AWAY. The virus can be reduced to a very low level where it is UNLIKELY to transmit to others, but it does not 'dissapear' only the SYMPTOMS.

Many people say or report its gone because they dont have symptoms or 'tests ' come back clear - some people do have strong immune systems that succeed in making it a low level hpv & can NOT show up on tests.

That would mean on paper its 'gone' however that low level can very easily raise and become symptomatic and contagious again. I was told this by three different doctors at top NYC hospitals.

MissDiva - I totally understand where you are coming from and was always of the same opinion. However, after talking to my gyn and reading UK government health sites on the Internet, I have since learned that HPV can 'clear' the body from many people within 36 months. New research showed this back in 2001. I was also quite surprised - however, it is good news!

Several government health sites also now state this info as standard.
